He's the Wild Blue Yonder, and The Tick is back to show why this outlandishly funny TV series should never have been canceled! After proving his mettle in comic books and animated TV, creator Ben Edlund's blue-insect superhero made his auspicious debut on Fox (in November 2001), portrayed in live action (in a buff-muscled rubber suit) by Patrick Warburton, the popular Seinfeld guest star (as "Puddy"), who instantly perfected the role he was born to play. In his appreciative commentary track, co-executive producer (and Men in Black director) Barry Sonnenfeld calls the pilot episode "the best thing I've ever directed," and it's easy to agree: wide-angle lenses, stylized sets, hilarious dialogue, and a comedically gifted cast make the episode (and the entire series) a perfect summation of Sonnenfeld's wacky style. Edlund concurs, observing that The Tick is "something you get or you don't," and the impatient Fox executives obviously didn't get the show's expert blend of absurdity, stupidity, and good-natured irreverence. They axed the series after eight of these nine episodes aired, only proving that The Tick was too hip for their bean-counting mentalities.
In the title role, Warburton (with highly expressive antennae) hits all the right notes of dimwitted innocence and brute-force gallantry, aided immeasurably by his moth-costumed sidekick Arthur (David Burke), wannabe lothario Batmanuel (Nestor Carbonell), and buxom beauty Captain Liberty (Liz Vassey). Attentive to the more mundane aspects of superheroism, The Tick offers outrageous villains (like the nefarious "Destroyo") and eccentric allies (like Ron Perlman's hilarious "Fiery Blaze") while showing that even crimefighters have everyday problems and desires. Brilliantly conceived and executed, The Tick can now be enjoyed by an audience it never had a proper chance to cultivate. --Jeff Shannon

Which is a cryin' shame, because we could ALL use a LOT more absurd humor in our lives! The comic character of the Tick was created by Ben Edlund. He established a theme of absurdity and ludicrous irreverence that makes you want to quote the comic, cartoon and tv show with a repetiveness that would annoy a three year old! The television show stayed true to the themes, even if some of the characters had to be changed. I thought nothing could be funnier than the pretentiousness of Die Fledermaus, until I saw Batmanuel (played with absolute perfection by Nestor Carbonell).
Basically, it comes down to: is this your kind of thing? If it is, and you're holding out because you're afraid it won't compare to the comic book or cartoon, GET IT! It's another incarnation of this hilarious group of characters and does NOT fail to deliver! C'mon, the moist hand of Destiny is at your back, and she's pushing!
"I am the silver ladle of justice pouring it's fresh cream over the just-picked strawberries of crime"
This is quite possibly the most original and hilarious "sit com" ever, if you can call it that. The Tick and his cohorts, Arthur, Captain Liberty, and Batmauel are superheros in "The City". The only twist is that just about anyone can choose to be, and is, a superhero as well. It is a profession about as common as the next, with both competent superheros as well as those that are miserable failures (similar to the concept behind "Mystery Men").
Our protagonists fall somewhere in the middle as they go about their daily business of saving the city from evil-doers. The Tick is a new arrival who isn't quite all there:
Batmanuel: "No offense"
The Tick: "None comprehended"
But, what The Tick lacks in cognitive abilities, he more than compensates for in sheer strength and nigh-invulnerability. This is a must-see for fans of off-beat humor the likes of Comedy Central's "Adult Swim" shows. Be sure to also check out the cartoon series of "The Tick".
One of the biggest object lessons I got off of the Tick is the fact that the Tick never had anything bad to say of anyone who wasnt evil. He was the most powerful superhero of any profiled, but never displayed ego or condescension to anyone. 'Arthur' who had almost nothing to offer as a superhero, the Tick found of value due to his intelligence. Batmanuelle who ran away or avoided any fight was always treated as a friend and with respect. Captain Liberty who in her own words got "hormonal" and tried to orchestrate his death, he still said "Please, we're all friends".
This series wont dissapoint, except for the fact that there were so few episodes.
The comics are only available via specialist comic shops, I personally have never read one.
Having bought other region 1 discs from Amazon, the Tick DVD was brought to my attention in a personal mailing. I was previously unaware of the live action series, so big thanks to Amazon for bringing it to my attention.
It's great, I echo every positive comment that has already been made on this forum.
The main reason I am submitting a review though, is to point out to other U.K. residents who may be contemplating buying this disc, that the DVD is actually region free! This means it will play on any player, whether it is multi-region or not. So, if you don't own a multi-region or 'chipped' player you will still be able to appreciate the brilliance of this TV series.
Please God, let the big-screen version happen!

I say FOX bring it back somehow, it's not too late, one of the best comic book live-action series ever made (same goes with The Flash).
If your a Tick fan or not your love this... well you will if you have a sense of humor anyway : D
