From the Manufacturer

Amsterdam's numerous canals make it the Venice of the North, but all of Nederland is filled with waterways. A rail journey in this low-lying country - where 20% of the land is below sea level - crosses countless bridges. Spend too much time admiring the beauty and you'll spend your money in bridge tolls!  Ticket to Ride Nederland - is the fourth in the series of Ticket to Ride Map Collection expansions and is set in The Netherlands low-country with hundreds of canals and rivers and just as many bridges that cross them. In Ticket to Ride Nederland all routes have a cost, which players must pay for with Bridge Toll Tokens. When the first route of a Double-route is claimed, the corresponding value of Bridge Toll Tokens is paid directly to the bank; but when it is the second route, the value is paid to the player who claimed the first route instead. Players score bonus points based on the total value of Bridge Toll Tokens they still own at game's end. The number of Bonus points scored varies per the table below.  In addition to the new map, Ticket to Ride Nederland includes 44 Destination Tickets, new Bridge Toll Tokens and multi-lingual rule book. Designed for 2 to 5 players, ages 8+,  this expansion requires train cards and trains from either Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride Europe.

We are big fan of TTR, and if you look you'll see I rarely write negative reviews. And, as you can tell from the other reviews a lot of people still really like this one in spite of what I'm about to say (and by no means do I mean no disrespect to my fellow reviewers who liked the game). I will note that we always play with two player and we used the dummy player as suggested with this version (so, it is quite possible that it is better with more players). But, there were enough things that I did not like about it that I though they were worth mentioning, especially since I'm sure others will play it as a two-player game as well.

1. The bonus for having most coins left at the end of the game seems way out of whack. A single coin could be worth 35 points in a two player game, which was enough to sway most game (and in one case turned what would have been a fun win into a less fun slaughter).

2. Only about once per game is it necessary for either of us to pay the other person for the second route claimed. I did chose to go around one time as well so I wouldn't have to pay. Together, this rule changed game play very little which didn't seem like a great mechanic to me.

3. If you take a loan you can't get the 35 point bonus card. So, since you cannot pass you will often be forced to either do something you don't want to do or try to stall longer than the other player until they are forced to do something they don't want to do.

4. This is a minor point, but the font on the board is hard to read, especially since it is used to spell cities from a part of the world that will not familiar to some people.

I guess my main point is you should at least think twice before getting this one if you'll mostly be playing a two-player game.

Ticket to Ride, in all of its variations, happens to be one of our recent favorites, so we *had* to get the newest vol. 4 expansion - and wait for three long weeks to play it as it was to be a gift!... Our highly-competitive boys, 10 and 8 years old (the 5-year old plays US and Europe with the goal of completing routes), are thrilled by how high-scoring this version is: in one of the games the older one held four 30-point routes among several others, and still lost (!) because of the huge unused tokens bonus... In this version, I take issue with the italicized city names - it's really difficult to read the board, and the boys make up funny names when tracing their routes at end-game. Overall, this is an intense, build-asap, easy to grasp take on the game -- if you are looking for just a little variation, get this map expansion; if you want different gameplay, go for Asia (vol. 1).

Love ticket to ride over all. This map is a nice change of pace and the tolls do add an interesting element of strategy. It forces my regular game group to play earlier instead of spending half the game collecting a huge hand of cards before playing trains. My only gripe about the game is the bonus for having the most toll money remaining seems too heavily weighted at the end of the game.

We have pretty much all of the other versions, including Africa which I love. The app is a wonderful game as well. We have a son living in Amsterdam so this was our Christmas game and was played and played by the guys and teens during the holidays! Usual high quality board/box, cards. Everyone learned some more about where he lives! Doesn't get much better than this when it comes to games.

I love all of the TTR games, so I got this expansion as soon as it came out. We've played it several times and really enjoy it so far. The bridge tokens are an interesting twist, as is the "neutral player" variant for two players. There is a lot of competition for the routes around Amsterdam, Utrect, and Rotterdam when playing with 5 players. It is definitely a game where you cannot procrastinate to get the routes you want. You get 40 trains, instead of 45 so you can play with trains/cards from Nordic Countries if you want (but only up to 3 players -- otherwise use Europe or USA). Overall, it is a great addition to the TTR family!

We own all of the ticket to ride games and think the rules that make this board game unique from the other TTR games are a lot of fun. We have played it with both 2 and 3 players.

We own TTR USA, Europe, Nordic Countrries, Switzerland/India and Netherlands. First let me say that while we love this game, a buddy of mine and I have come to the conclusion that this game is PURE EVIL. I have yet to ever win at this game and yet to figure out how to. It has become the joke in my family, which is why everyone else wants to play this version.
*Joking Aside* I would not suggest this game if you are new to the Ticket to Ride collection. Try USA or Europe as a starter. This is a bit more advanced as you have to keep track of tokens to pay for each route to the bank or other players and collect them other players. This game play is quite different from the other sets, but don't let my misfortune and aggravation towards this game sway you from buying this game.
