Other matters.... That's what I think this book is really about. It's about family relationships. The heroine is a daughter and mother. She is a divorced wife who is reluctantly attracted to a new man, one she has no business getting involved with. These relationships are sometimes warm, sometimes messy and confusing. She becomes involved with two other families that add depth and interest and that are an inextricable part of the story. Like the mysteries, they are much like life itself. (For those who care, the love story that slowly brews as the novel progresses is handled with insight and decorum. There are no ripped bodices or sculpted abs on the cover of the book; there are none inside, either. I like that.) In between all these elements, we live the life of Maggie Redmond, driving around on errands, watching her son play baseball, reacting emotionally and physically to all sorts of surprises and trying not to show it. I'm male; Maggie isn't. But this is life.
So I loved Low Tide for its unexpected correspondence to life as we live it, or might live it, and its refusal to get stuck in the conventions of the mystery novel. As I see it, it's a mystery novel, and it's a novel about life. But more than that, it's a novel, period.
I'd just finished writing this review when I realized I'd failed to mention two of my favorite characters. Coco, Maggie's dog, dissolves in ecstasy when Maggie comes home, and Stoopid, the rooster, has no idea what his job is but runs around busily looking for it (rather like some people I've known). I thought it good to give Coco and Stoopid their due, because they add points of welcome humor to the often tense texture of Low Tide--and because I love well-observed animals in literature.
The mysterious Mr. Boudreaux is a villain that you can't help but be intrigued by and even like. He has a very strict moral compass that doesn't always coincide with the law but you can't help but see him as a man that is neither all good nor all bad. Ms. McKenna brilliantly makes him a complex, multi-faceted good/bad guy.
The dialogue is masterful and her description of Apalachicola is dead-on. You actually feel the humidity and hear the rustle of the palm trees.
I was so drawn into the book that I read it in one sitting - I couldn't put it down. Unlike most new authors, there are no bumps in the road that jerk you out of the story. You'd never guess that this is her debut book into the mystery/thriller category. I've already read the next book in her series, Rip Tide, and it's just as fabulous as this one. I can't wait for the next in the series and won't have to wait long for it; it's due for release within the month. Keep them coming Ms. McKenna - I can't wait to go back to the panhandle of Florida and see what happens next!
All in all, a fantastic, fast read, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series!
Suicides, rape, domestic abuse, child abuse, drug
abuse, meth labs, drug running, secrets, oysters,
dancing, humor, romance plus more all combine
for a fast paced, well developed story with well
defined, colorful, some quirky, some temperamental
and well created characters.
The main female character Maggie and her two
children live in Apalachicola, Florida with their dog,
Coco who is a five year old Catahoula Parish Leopard
Hound, a rooster named Stoopid and a mixture of
White Silkie, Buff Orpington and Rhode Island Red
hens. She is divorced and is police Lieutenant.
Great ending. Amazing what can be revealed at
low tide!! Looking forward to reading the next
The plot is believeable and retains your interest.
I have read all of the published books in this series and anxiously await the next.
I'm an avid reader and I'm binge reading the series. It was recently suggested to me by the Amazon spider. I'm in the beginning of the fourth missive. The characters are becoming more and more interesting and the author's writing is fantastic. Lots of "tongue in cheek" that makes me laugh out loud. The books could be read as "stand alones" yet I recommend starting with Low Tide and continuing through as the plots and characters build one upon the other. Wait till you become acquainted with Maggie's rooster, Stoopid, and her dog, Coco - and then there are her human contacts.
Not too violent, not too sexual, just right casual reading with plots and complex quirky characters to enjoy.
It makes me want to visit Apalachicola , Florida.
