Inspired by the special bond between mother and child, Bell's poems search for meaning in a world of misconception. They begin with small everyday moments and end with a shift in understanding that not only enlightens, but leaves you wondering.
From quiet nights reflecting on the sound of her child's smile, to viewing the world from the perspective of a potted tree dreaming of being rooted into true mother earth, A Tide Should Be Able to Rise Despite Its Moon is a collection of raw, honest, modern-day fables that remind readers to look deeper, feel more, and let the world speak for itself.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Ethereal. Hypnotic. Oracular." Amie McCracken, author of Emotionless
"Jessica Bell captures motherhood in our daydreams and in our kitchens. It dances on a celestial plane, but then knocks the reader back down to Earth in an instant, with word combos only natural poets can weave. It's highly universal, yet still lands in its own category of brilliance." Elaina Battista-Parsons, author of Italian Bones in the Snow
"Each compelling meditation on daily life as mother and son blends the earthy with the ethereal. From Virginia Woolf and a grumbly fridge to sea spray, yucca leaf shadows, and fairies, these poems deliver discovery and delight." Melanie Faith, author of From Promising to Published
"Profound observations about relationships between people, nature, and life experiences which left me gasping with both amazement and recognition. Mystical, wise and original." Karen Alghabban, writer
"In A Tide Should Be Able to Rise Despite Its Moon Jessica Bell has thoroughly explored the topography of parenthood. She describes each moment with a keen eye and an open ear; with passion and with gentle understanding. You read her poems and say: 'Yes, that's exactly what it's like.'" Alan Humm, Editor of One Hand Clapping magazine

Most mothers will recognise the range of moods portrayed but this is not just for parents. We were all children once and most of us are fascinated by our own journeys to adulthood, in all their pain and pleasure. Writers through the ages, from Wordsworth - ‘The child is father to the man’ - to Roger McGough and Carol Ann Duffy, have contributed memorable lines on this most universal of human themes. This book deserves its place among the best of them.
I loved the sparkling play on words, drawn from childish misunderstandings
‘I believed it was a prison
of light as a child’
or from sharp observation of the changed world in which we live
‘Escape has become e-scape’
or from an awareness of deeper meanings that leads the reader to unexpected thoughts. One of my favourite poems starts
‘My son
runs circles around us’
and from that wry beginning, the poem moves through the literal circles drawn by the little boy, to a philosophical view of his place in a bigger universe of circles.
So easy to read and enjoy that it takes a second, and third, reading to appreciate the artistry behind every well-chosen image and line break. If you think you don’t like poetry, try this book! And if you love poetry, what are you waiting for? Dive into the tide that should be able to rise despite its moon.
The vivid imagery combined with authentic expressions of discovery in both mother and son shine through in this collection of poems.
From yucca leaf shadows to a cicada's call, readers who enjoy nature poetry, lyric poetry, and narrative poetry will find much to savor here as will readers who like reading about family dynamics. Also, parents, caretakers for young children, grandparents or aunties and uncles, and teachers will all find resonant moments here to remind them of their own connections to youth, both present and past.
Brilliantly devoid of over-explanation, the poems are eminently accessible. Each creates an energy-filled space that allows you to feel what you’re feeling and ascribe the meaning you find.
The images conjure a sense of watching a movie. Consider a boy skipping a black stone on a quiet sea. The same boy, now forlorn, sits on a couch beside his mother as she scrolls through his baby photos until he feels better. And the author as a child confused by what “youth in Asia” has to do with her parents’ argument about a person’s right to die, a sentiment that made me laugh out loud.
Many of the poems also contain a musical lilt, which is not surprising, given the author’s background as a current musician and past singer in Keep Shelly in Athens. I particularly loved seeing this rebel-turned-mother watch how her son treats her 15-year-old acoustic guitar:
“My 3-year-old
son ties
my dressing gown’s
belt around
the acoustic neck,
drags it around the house
along the floor
pretending to have caught
a sea beast.”
Delightful!
This book is more than worth your time. Highly recommend.
3 Stars
This book wasn't my cup of tea, and it's a mixed bag for me. I didn't find these poems enjoyable. Nor can I name my favorites, they're un-titled. I didn't particularly care about the layout of the book. I would have preferred an organized layout. Maybe if the poetry was broken down by themes. By doing so, it would make a new genre more approachable. That being said, I like a very specific style of poetry, similar to Robert Frost. However, poetry isn't my typical go-to-book pick, but The Looking Glass inspired me to explore more of my poetry options.
I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
