Tiffen UV Protection filter Film, as well as video, often exhibits a greater sensitivity to what is to us invisible, ultraviolet light. This is most often outdoors, especially at high altitudes, where the UV absorbing atmosphere is thinner; and over long distances, such as marine scenes. It can show up as a bluish color cast with color film, or it can cause a low contrast haze that diminishes details, especially when viewing far away objects, in either color or black and white. Ultraviolet filters absorb UV light generally without affecting light in the visible region. Using a Tiffen UV Protector on your Digital HD DSLR While the UV Protection filter has served its purpose in the film era for many years it will still continue to be one of the most popular choices in accessories today. Digital cameras have blocks, auto correction and digital filters that combat the bluish color cast therefore making the UV Protection filter a simple protector for your lens to combat dirt, finger prints & that fateful knock or drop. I purchased the 72mm piece to go on the lens I use the most, my wide angle 28-135mm IS lens from Canon. I always have the lens cap on when I'm not using my lens and when I'm using it, I always have the petal on it. This filter screws perfectly on the lens. In addition to the filter I can also use my petal and the lens cap if needed!! Big plus!
I haven't noticed any "ghosting" effects like some users have reported. I've taken photos in the early morning, mid-day, and at dusk. Still no ghosting effects when using the filter.
The filter is solid and has some weight to it. I feel as though its of high quality. The weight of the glass has no impact on shooting.
You can't beat the price for the quality you get!
I own a few of these, I use them on lenses attached to my digital SLRs when I'm walking around doing tourist stuff and taking snapshots, the benefit of protection out in the world outweighs any image degradation for me. For inside/ studio use, these come off. I also use them on my Mamiya RZ lenses for shooting film outside for the haze filtering abilities stated above. All of my Mamiya lenses have a 77mm thread on the front so it is very convenient.
A weak ago I contacted Tiffen Customer Support by email. They thanked me for being Tiffen customer and sent me the instruction how to fix it:
"On the filter retention ring are two notches opposite of each other, think 6 and 12 o’clock. If you insert a two point compass, or something similar into these rings and twist, you can tighten the retention ring to lock the glass down. Its best to insert the two point compass, then spin the entire filter to loosen rather than rotating the two point compass. See the diagram below: (look at the picture attached)"
What? Really! ... I explained that this is too complecated for me and asked if I can return the filter. Today, is the 8th day I am waiting for their answer...
I put this on Canon EF 50mm F1.4 USM. I know this lens won't be sharp picture when wide open aperture but when
put this tiffin filter, focus won't be clear anymore. It's just killing your lens, camera and precious time and memory.
I recently purchased HOYA filter which is a few $ more expensive than this tiffin filter in Amazon however, that is
much worth to pay. Look at the picture, I believe no word needed to tell the difference.
Tiffin, it's just a plain glass or rather low quality plain glass. If you are beginner but becoming serious about photo shooting
and already spending much for lens and camera, why not spend a few $ more.

Have used this while taking lots of holiday pictures and they've all come out well.
The first thing I noticed about this filter was that the glass was not fastened tightly in the frame, meaning it rattled around. Perhaps I received a bad one, but I was underwhelmed by this.
The threads fit fine, no issues there.
I would recommend this to someone looking for a cheap filter for a kit lens, but if you are looking for a decent piece of kit you'll need to spend a little more. I got rid of this and bought a Hoya filter locally almost right away.
A good quality, well manufactured, well priced 58mm UV filter. Bought to mainly protect my new lens, this is exactly what I needed and the price was excellent. I see no manufacturing gripes that have been highlighted in previous reviews, but for general protection (all my lenses have UV filters on them) and nice build quality, I find it hard to see how you could go wrong.
Product arrived on tuesday 18th 2018, opened on the 21st to find several marks and a long fine streak across the glass.
I attempted to clean them using a lens cloth, which did remove the marks but not the streak which appears to be some kind of scratch.
Will definitely be returning this item, not what I expected from a Tiffen product.
All things considered, this is a cost effective way of protecting a far more expensive lens and so is highly recommended.
