I used Tiffen DFX2 (the plug-in for Photoshop elements) and it worked fine. After moving and a HD crash, lost key to re-install so I bought DFX2 Standalone. I like it better, because photoshop by itself can use a lot of memory. Earlier this month DFX3 was on sale and I bought the standalone version again. This one had additional features which I like as well.

If you ever used a 35mm SLR film camera with filters, you know what a difference the right one makes, and Tiffen's product goes several steps further by having many special effects at your mouse's command. This is good for a casual user of digital imaging software that doesn't want a long learning curve, as well as a more experienced user who likes to fiddle with the adjustments, creating your own custom adjustments. So....

If you like to fiddle with the adjustments and your spouse prefers to click on an effect and save image this is made for you.

I have had this plug-in for more than 6 months and I am still finding new exciting combinations.

To begin with, it is easy to install and it's accessed from the Photoshop's filter menu. As you review you choices you see your image on each filter to help you quickly choose your effect. Most filters have at least 10 choices, usually by degree and there are basically the same blend modes as Photoshop as well a an opacity bar. The programs remembers the last filter combination which can be cleared with a single click but is a great time saver.

What a great way to make you images pop!

Wow, I am really surprised by just how much I love this software. It is easy to get started using this software. The learning curve is really, really low. And most important of all, it is SO much fun to use. Just open the photo you want to play with and preview all the effects of the various filters and special effects. I have Photoshop and wasn't sure just how useful this software would be. I was worried it would be too redundant, but I was so wrong. This software does stuff Photoshop can't do. There are hundreds of cool effects you could add to your photos. I highly recommend this software to photographers who like to get creative with their photos. It's great for both beginners and pros.

Style Name: Standalone Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I've been a serious photographer for more than fifty years. Back in the day, using filters was expensive, inconvenient, unpredictable and irreversible. You could practically win an award at a photo show for any successful creative use of filters in your print.

I started using this package when it was first developed by another company. I've continued to use it through the present day - and I also use its primary competitor from Nik Software.

Am I nuts? No. I use both programs sparingly and only when I want to a) achieve a very specific effect or 2) play.

Tiffen DFX has an interface that only a masochist could love, but after some tinkering and manual reading, it is usable. Ultimately - and you should know this going in - the learning curve is steep.

What you begin with are 125 individual filters, each of which can be manipulated with sets of parameters. In other words, the possibilities are infinite. I have never, ever been able to open this program, do what I intended to do and move on with my life. Instead, each and every time, I get caught up in playing with the endless variations that are possible. I am forever amazed at what you can do with an image, with a little tweak there and another here. Some addicted to Solitaire: I could be easily addicted to Tiffen DFX.

A program like this cannot really be described in words. Just in preparing to write this review, on a program that I have been using for years in various versions, I spent more than a half-hour just playing with some of the features.

There are other tools as well, particularly a masking tool from the original creators of the program.

If you're serious about your photography - or just want to make Instagram effects look like pre-school exercises - you ought it to yourself to at least demo Tiffen DFX. It is available as both a plug-in for popular image editing programs or, as this, as standalone version.

But.....there never seems to be the filter that I would like at the time. The lack of a soft focus glam filter is really inexcusable. I had also hoped for a filter that would provide an animated cartoon look but nope, that isn't there either. Plus, there are limitations on how you can use it and how it integrates, or doesn't really integrate into photo shop. Yes, you open it up with Photoshop but you can't really toggle back and forth, and can't use Photoshop features. In short, this has a bunch of filters, many aren't on photoshop, but many are, so what you're essentially paying for is a bunch of pre-cooked filters, but not as many as you'd think because of the redundancy, and that's about it.

I am a longtime Photoshop user (like almost 2 decades), and along with Lightroom, have been doing graphics and photo editing for a fairly long time. I bought this Tiffen software during a good sale as a means of adding some more character to my photography that can't be easily done in Photoshop or Lightroom.

Many of the presets it has are pretty neat and can do a lot to create different looks and effects in your photos. I'd say a bit more than half of them I question if I'd ever use, but the other half are interesting, unique, and when used with the right pictures, pretty impressive. And I can stop fumbling with my Cokin filters because just about every effect I could do with those I can now apply after the fact and with far finer control.

I don't think I've found many effects that can't be done manually in PS or LR, but in most cases it would be very labor intensive, and just having a quick filter effect with a few sliders saves a lot of time. But most of the user interface is strange and a little hard to get used to at first. Thankfully there are some videos and free webinars that will really expose how some pretty powerful image manipulation can be done quickly and easily. Once you're over the curve, the tool starts to get more fun.

As I'm sure most of the people have mentioned, this is not a complete photo editing application. It is primarily designed for applying filters and effects to all or part of the image. It has some of the basic manipulation tools, but not all that you'd expect (or at least some of them are a bit more awkward than you'd get with the major image tools). It really needs to be used in conjunction with another tool as part of a workflow.

So expect a learning curve, don't expect it to be Instagram or other "click one thing and get an entirely different photo" effect tool, and I think most advanced users will find that it can be used in a lot of interesting ways.
