Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8-12-- Nightmares come often to 18-year-old Zack Lloyd. Tigers stalking and a shadowy mystery man inhabit his mind in frightening episodes that he cannot forget or interpret. He finds refuge in his art when he's not swooning over his new girlfriend, Clara. But finding her and winning the school's art fair are secondary to understanding his dreams. Therapy helps Zack uncover vague memories about his past; as things become clearer, he recalls a father he once knew and loved, a man he believes to be dead. Confronting his mother, he learns that his father is alive and travels to South Carolina to find him. In the process, he finds himself. Zack's coming-of-age and breaking away from his mother's stronghold comes full circle as a result of this visit. The balance of family responsibility and achieving independence is examined and portrayed through realistic characters. Underlying themes of romance, sibling relations, and artistic expression are well integrated into the story and add to successful character development. Zack is a likable, albeit confused, young man to whom YA readers will relate. --Sharon Korbeck, Milwaukee Public Library
