What a fantastic listen this book was! I was hooked right from the opening chapters and devoured it quite quickly. Alessandra Torre is an author that blows me away each time I pick up one of her reads! I loved how Riley and Brett first met and I could feel the attraction oozing between the pages! Riley was unsure it could work out, but Brett was persistent, and it was a great trait in an amazing guy!
Brett pursued Riley, after they parted ways. I loved the way he courted her and pushed her to take the chance. Riley was hesitant but with the help of one of her friends, she took the plunge. But all the travelling and the coincidences had her double guessing her choices and who Brett was.
Brett was such a confident and caring guy, but he had his secrets, that made him a little shady... Once I realised what he was doing it melted my heart. He may be a successful and wealthy man, but he also did things for others that I admired. He treated Riley well, and I could see she was someone he was falling hard for.
There was a third perspective tied throughout this story and it certainly kept me on edge. My heart ached for that woman, but I loved the determination and strength that she had to pass her days and the belief she would make it! I was unsure who that person was and I was kept guessing for a long time, but once revealed I hoped it all would work out.
I thoroughly enjoyed the narration by Piper Goodeve and Angelo Di Loreto. Piper Goodeve portrayed the female voice in the story perfectly and I was kept guessing when it came to the third perspective. Angelo Di Loreto had me second guessing Brett, putting harshness into Brett's tone, and sweetness as well. They were both fantastic narrators that I hope I get to listen to again.
Additionally, I did not fully connect with Rylee and Brett as a couple. They seemed to fall in love way too quickly, particularly with not really knowing each other. I mean Rylee seemed, at first to be content with Brett not sharing much about his life, being cagey when she would ask, and full out kicking her out of conversations with his "boys".
I was also a little surprised by Rylee's reaction to Brett at the end of the book. She seemed a bit too unaffected by the events that occurred to her, and walked right back into his arms.
However, what I did like about the book was the passion that came from both Rylee and Brett, which was beautifully written by Ms. Torre. All in all, I think I was too focused on the big secret reveal to full enjoy being in the moment. A suggestion to readers, go into this blind or be spoiled, but don't expect a huge AHA moment, cause you won't find it, and you don't need it. A word to the reader, though, this book contains scenes of abuse, kidnapping and suggestions of rape (but not explicit), which can be tough for some readers.
We first met Riley and Brett in Still, a novella which was released in the Bend Anthology last year. Riley was in the Bahamas with her friends for a bachelorette party when she meets Brett in the lobby. He sees her struggling with her heels and offers her a nice comfy pair of slippers. Their attraction is instant and hot. Riley allows him to walk her to her room, but doesn't invite him in. The next day she regrets her decision so when she sees him that night, she decides she should take a chance. They have an amazing night, only Brett wants more. Riley is hesitant, but with Brett's wealth, he's able to fly them places to see each other often. Theirs is a whirlwind romance and both fall fast. Riley is scared, but when she's with him and in his arms, she knows it'll be worth the risk.
Brett has secrets that he's not ready to talk about yet. His silence and lack of explanation, makes Riley a little too noisy and you know something bad is probably going to happen. We are introduced to Kitten in small chapters throughout this story and learn bit and pieces of her captivity. Everything ties together and there's a twist at the end, you may or may not figure out. This book will keep you on your toes and reading faster trying to figure out what's going to happen next.
Brett is a thirty-seven year old extremely hot and wealthy man. I loved him immediately. He has his secrets but loves Riley deeply. He's so sweet and perfect for her. Riley is thirty-two and a bit insecure, but a great character. She was a little more hesitant about their relationship at first than I like, but it worked out perfectly. There were however, a few times I wanted to grab her and tell her to just ask Brett, rather than doing what she did. But the book wouldn't have worked that way, so I get it and understand. Patience. I'm not always good with that, and I actually considered skipping to the end a couple of times and sneaking a peak.
Overall, really great book which I thoroughly enjoyed. We were provided three POVs and got our smile at the end.
Top international reviews
It is official though, Alessandra Torre has just reached my favourite author list *round of applause*. She is so incredibly talented with her orchestration of the whole book, the way it was set out, the timing of reach narration and all the while keeping the reader on edge guessing throughout the whole book. That right there is pure talent if you ask me.
I also have come to love the portrayal of ‘love’ in this book. I am not a cheesy person, very far from delving in to romantics to be honest but the writing just makes you think…this isn’t some average romance, one we may see in many books no, this right here is the real thing. Holding on and fighting, healing, I’ve never believed more. The way Riley sees her whole future with this guy, realises the dangers of falling, it’s presented in the most realistic way possible. Something another woman may be able to relate to. If love exists this is it. I don’t get this cheesy usually guys but heck if this book doesn’t bring it out of me!
What if we grew old together? What if this was it, he was my soulmate and this breathless, nervous excitement that I felt whenever he reached for me, smiled at me – what if it never faded and was there forever? What if our kids had kids, and we retired together and bought vacation homes and went on cruises and played shuffleboard? What if my hair turned white, and he still loved me, and we died like that old couple in Titanic, our hands clasped, us entering heaven within minutes of each other?
I have read many slavery themed books in the past, Stockholm syndrome is highly prioritized in these ones but this one highlighted the strength of the one captured. She was able to keep in touch to with her former self and not succumb to the torment she was dealt. In that sense this book does touch on a very sensitive topic so if you’re a squeamish kinda person then I don’t think this is for you. However if you are familiar with this concept in stories then you need to read this!
Riley and Brett both managed to steal my heart. They were both pretty much perfect. Riley’s narration portrayed some of the finest wisdom / thoughts. I think I connected to her character more too because of the way she acted and thought about life Reflected my own views. She is so hard to dislike. And Brett is honestly every female readers dream. He’s the mysterious type that keeps the ladies wondering but he’s actually pretty sweet and an incredibly loving man.
Bottom line is, I loved it, and this will stay with me for a long time. Such a beautiful but thoughtful story. Alessandra writes some of the best romances.
WHAT A READ!!!
This is the second Alessandra Torre book I've read and I'm becoming an avid fan of her work. I love the way she adds just a hint of darkness to her novels that keeps you on the edge of your seat while your quite literally white knuckling the arm rests !!
This book took me on a gritty, deep and twisted ride and I LOVED EVERY MOMENT.
There's everything you want in a really good novel all packed into this one story.
You've got intrigue, mystery, fear, passion and an emotionally charged set of characters.
As you read your drawn into the world with ease like your a silent observer within the scenes that unfold, I love when an author can do that and drag me into the environment they are displaying that I feel like I'm hearing the same sounds and smelling the same smells the characters are!
Riley is a small town girl that isn't quite so used to the big bad world outside of her bubble ....... then in walks Brett and with one slight touch pops her protective bubble and allows her to breathe. Only Brett is all consuming and soon she feels like she's drowning, but it's a good feeling right when you've met the 'one'?
Yet how can she be sure Brett is the man she craves when she doesn't know all his secrets? Finding out those secrets could be the ruin of Riley.
I can't recommend this book enough it's a must read for anyone that likes a darker, plot twisting novel.
Tight is told from three POVs: mainly Riley’s, some short snippets from Brett, and finally the mysterious Kitten.
Riley is 32, never been married, hasn’t been in a relationship for years, lives in a small town where everyone knows everyone else’s business. Her behaviour is out of the ordinary when she first encounters Brett, during her friend’s hen weekend in the Bahamas.
Brett is gorgeous and appears to be rich. He is intense and is smitten with Riley. He doesn’t talk much about his past or his business dealings. The snippets of information you get from his POV paints a pretty clear picture of what he does and his motivation.
Kitten is a mystery. She’s a captive. As the story unfolds, we realise that she could be one of two people.
Riley and Brett’s long-distance relationship progresses via phone calls, texts and weekends away to exotic locations. These getaways always involve Brett disappearing for an evening to take care of business. After a while, Riley begins to get suspicious about what he’s doing. She’s in love with him but she’s not sure that she trusts him 100%, and she is desperate not to have her heart broken.
This was a well-written story. The denouement near the end is not a massive surprise, if you're a discerning reader, but it was heartfelt. I think the author did a great job to keep the momentum and suspense going in the story. Definitely worth a read!
I've read Black Lies so I know this author likes to mess with minds, I read the blurb and thought yep I can deal with this sounds quite straight forward, I'll be fine. Oh my word, how wrong could I be!
The warning at the start of the book should have got the alarm bells ringing but no I carried on regardless.
Totally blind, without any idea, I embarked on the journey of this love story with a difference.
I'm sure this author must sit back on completion and think mwahahaha that's another one to draw them in, lead them along and then boom obliterate their minds!!
I literally had NO idea, I thought I had it and then that moment in the car knocked my thought process, I had to go back and reread the previous chapter again. I was floored like never before. I had to stop and think and gather my thoughts. How could this be right, how could this happen, what have I just read.
I would urge anyone thinking of reading this book to go in blind and experience this absolutely amazing book without knowing the twist.
I'm off now to start it again, to see if I missed any clues along the way and also because I any get this twisted story of Brett and Riley out of mind.
As in all of Alessandra's books there is twist and turns and I'm never quite sure how the storyline is going to pan out. This talented lady has a unique knack that keeps you guessing however I also found Tight to be different from all her other books and was confused how Kitten and Elyse fitted into the story but that's the way it's meant to be, who wants a story where there's no surprises and you know where it's gonna end. I loved Riley's character and that she was a real 30+ yr old woman, then there's Brett he's definitely my favourite male lead in a long time I just kept hoping against hope that he wouldn't disappoint. Did he? Was he to good to be true? Was he hiding things? You will just have to read it yourself to find out and believe me until you do you really don't know what you are missing. Alessandra books just keep getting better and better and Tight is now my favourite book this yr and in my top 10 list ever along with a few other of this incredible talented author's books it's that brilliant.
Alessandra has an edge that's hard to define...a bravery in that she dares to be different and a talent that sets her aside from most....she isn't afraid to stretch people's boundaries and push them out of their comfort zones...sometimes cringing and sometimes kicking and screaming! Only a few others have ever reached her standard for me. Her stories are totally unique and so clever. This one in particular has a twist that I for one didn't see coming. I was convinced that another scenario would play out, and I think she leads you down that path, so there's a twist within a twist really...fabulously done.
The romance is real and not cheesy, the sex scenes, whilst steamy are tasteful and not just thrown in for the sake of it and the plot/story line is just genius. I loved all of the characters and the subject matter, although traumatic and distressing, is handled with insight and empathy and without sensationialism.
Another one I couldn't put down. I can't praise this author enough...if you've never tried her books ask yourself why not and bite the bullet. I doubt very much you'll regret it.
“Beverly’s was one big room, a buffet set on the back wall, picnic tables filling the large, paisley-wallpapered space . There were no private tables; everyone grabbed any available seat, community pitchers of tea on the tables, refilled on a regular basis by one of Beverly’s four girls. There was no menu, and there weren’t any specials. Lunch was seven bucks, dinner was ten, and credit cards weren’t accepted. Sweet tea, coffee, and water were the only drink options, and you cleared your own plate when done. When short on cash, Beverly had an IOU form at the front counter that you could complete and settle up when times got better.”
There are two threads here, running in tandem, although ‘time- lagged’; each of them is written in a different way. One is written in a very light and breezy manner with lots of descriptive detail, while the other is written in a somewhat ‘stilted’ way, being dark and scary, and oftentimes short and sharp. I like that there is little ‘detail’ in the dark and scary strand, which revolves around ‘Kitten’ and her tormentor; it is already too terrifying for the person living it; I can use my imagination here, and it runs wild. I find myself feeling powerless to help ‘her’ in her trauma, and terrified she is not going to make it!!
‘Brett’ comes across as a really good guy, but no ‘wuss’; no weakling; defo. Alpha male. He is the strong and silent type; he is full of surprises, this we see as the story unfolds. He has ‘Riley’ worried by his ‘secretive’ nature, but his secrets are kept for a very good reason.
I like that the story is told from different POV's, with each protagonist speaking their thoughts, plus Kittens’ POV. As the story progresses, the ‘banter’ between Brett and Riley becomes noticeably ‘easier’, more ‘comfy’, as expected in a relationship that is ‘going somewhere’, and yet Brett is becoming more secretive. Just what is he lying about? The writer is able to do this in a real and natural way; rolling it over the reader. Very nicely done!
“I used to be a man who didn’t care. Who smiled freely, put his shoes up on the table, drank to excess, loved without reserve. Then, the woman I loved more than anything in the world was taken. That day put a cloud over my life. Changed the man I was to the man I am now. A man who considers every action. Who hides more than he gives. Who lies more than he tells the truth.”
The reader is left, wanting to know who this woman is/was; just what is Brett hiding? Is this the ‘Kitten’ we hear from; the slave? Is she still alive; what happened to her, and what is her connection to Brett? If he finds her alive, how will this impact on his relationship with Riley? Is he only playing games with Riley; how sincere or not, is he? So many questions; so many different ways this story could play out. Kept me guessing till almost the very end. Cleverly done!
“I was lying when I met Riley. Playing a part that I’d cultivated to such a point that it felt natural. I was in a role, so I kept playing it. Provided a card that contained rows of lies. Talked and hinted of a life I didn’t keep. I played the part, I f****d the girl, and somehow, amid the skin and the touches and the gorgeous crook of her smile , I felt it. Felt a tugging on a part of my heart that I thought had died.”
This writer managed to unearth all of my emotions: happy, sad, scared, worried, apprehensive; they were all laid bare. I laughed, cried and groaned – a lot. You cannot ‘skip’ read this book; you have to READ it: slowly, and carefully, digesting it thoroughly to enjoy it. Oh, and I read most of it out loud!! Aaaaaahh! The ‘clincher’
““Can you give us a moment, Riley?” “Sure.” I stepped back, my wave wilting. “Please shut the door.” “Okay.” I met Brett’s eyes, and he smiled. A horrible smile, one that was warm and reassuring and fake. I wrapped my hand around the cold metal knob and pulled, breaking our eye contact, the firm snap of the door in place final and offensive. I stood for a moment, outside, my ear to the wood, but it was too thick, their words impossible to understand.”
See what I mean: I’m cringing and crying at the same time! Beautiful! 🌹 ❤️
"Tight" is possibly one of the best books I have ever read. I could not put it down.
A few places were a tad slower than the rest, but Alessandra Torre has still kept it moving at a pace that prevents it becoming too slow.
Each chapter is smoothly written and the characters are wholly believable. They are normal people and as such, you have the need to know what becomes of them.
I highly recommend this book to anybody who has a love of gritty, yet truly romantic tales.
I would give a lot more than five stars if I could believe me you have to meet Riley and Brett I will say this book will definitely make you think but at the same time you can't put it down you need to turn the page...you need to carry on into the next chapter!!! It was just AMAZING....enjoy!!! :)
Great writing a well paced story and a lovely ending.
I am in the middle ground. I read my first book by her only a few months ago and immediately started working my way through the others. I have loved them all.
Tight is different. As always the writing is exquisite. The storyline is gutsy, leaving many things to come together towards the end. It could be a crime thriller with super hot sex.
Ms Torre need not worry. Readers old and new will be stunned by the power of the subject matter and delighted at a truly top quality book.
