A meander through life in Tijuana

The author is a writer for a local publication and he's also a tour guide (though he may have "retired" from that.) For those unfamiliar with Tijuana, it may seem like these adventures are far-fetched but as a resident there myself, I can vouch that yes, this is how it rolls down there.

Sex, strip clubs, drugs, tacos, cheap beer, unusual characters from all corners of the world, and a bit of grime, it's all in this book and reminds me a bit of the old days of TJAmigos. It's coupled with his ongoing musings about the direction of his life and a few apologies to his mom for the outrageous content.

His reviews of the taco stands and craft brews near the end of the book are solid and current.... as with everything in Tijuana, your mileage will vary.

p/s - The price of 6.64 happens to be the area code for Tijuana.

If you've never been to Tijuana you might read this book and think "nah, that didn't happen". As an expatriated resident I can tell you that you'd be wrong. There are some hellacious stories set in hellacious places told in this book. Having been there/done some of that in the dark places mentioned in this book I assure you they all ring true. I finished the book wanting more but wanting the author to out himself thru anymore of Tijuana going Tijuana on him. This book is good for those who've never been to Tijuana and those who have lived it. There's no city like it in the world like Tijuana and the author has done it service.

What i love about this book: a little good girl like me can't just go wandering around the shady parts of tijuana. Though i often wonder and fantasize about witnessing the wild sex and drugs that happen in those seedy bars and strip clubs, I'd have to be a fly on the wall to make it out alive. This book let me be that fly, and it was a really cool experience. SEXY AS HELL!! Also, I've never been much of a taco enthusiast, but this book inspired me to expand my horizons.

This book is a look into the many sides of Tijuana that you never see or hear about just by watching the news or hearing crazy stories from people who have had wild experiences there. It has certainly earned its infamy but it is also a city with amazing food and beer, plus plenty of art and music by passionate people looking to make a difference. The author's love for the city is evident and he does well to explain the good, bad and downright crazy sides to the city during his experience as a resident and also a tour guide. There are recommendations aplenty for good food and beer spots and he goes into great detail about why he likes (or doesn't like) certain spots. This isn't meant to be a guide book, instead it reads like a collection of stories from somebody in the know and just trying to live life in a city that is an anomaly to the rest of Mexico and perhaps the world. Definitely worth the read!
