Tim Drake: Robin (2022-) #1 Kindle & comiXology

3.9 out of 5 stars 142 ratings

Step aside, Damian-the world’s favorite Robin has got this! That’s right, after years away, Tim Drake is taking center stage in a brand-spanking-new Robin series of his very own! A mystery over a year in the making takes shape, as a new villain who’s been hounding Tim from afar decides to take things up close and personal, putting Bernard and everyone else Tim cares about in peril as things go from bad to worse for the world’s oldest and canonically tallest Robin [no, I will not be fact-checking that]. All that and Tim finally carves out a corner of Gotham City just for himself, and sets up shop in his very own…murder shack boat? Fan-favorite writer Meghan Fitzmartin teams up with beloved Harley Quinn artist Riley Rossmo to define the next chapter in Tim’s life. And if that wasn’t enough, break out your skateboards and motorcycles ’cuz we’ve assembled a murderer’s row of artists to draw the 1990s’ One True Robin™ in his various looks from over the years!

The writing and pace or the best parts of this book. The art direction is off and feels rushed. The series seems designed to grab gay readers, but only will attract gay men, not women of any kind, and definitely not anyone straight. It’s sad bc Tim Drake should be something more than this debut issue, even with his new direction since pride month. I expect something like this from Image but it seems DC is losing its creative edge it had and becoming a company that attempts to be trendy but ends up being out of touch.

I'm a big fan of detective-style comics, but it feels like not many Tim Drake writers have played on his detective side very effectively. I like how this is done though, it feels very classic mystery - playing off Tim's occasionally-referenced enjoyment of mystery novels. And the new cast of side characters its introducing is intriguing. It was a little dull in some parts of the introduction, making it kind of a mid-story, but it had enough to draw me in regardless.
A lot of people don't like how the artist (Riley Rossmo) draws people, but personally I love how he draws the layouts and backgrounds, plus how he handles the detective elements by highlighting small details. I think it matches the detective theme nicely, though I can see why the style won't appeal to everyone.
It also featured a little of Tim's new boyfriend Bernard in the beginning, which I'm glad because the character definitely needs more on-panel development to work as a love interest.
Overall, I enjoyed it, though in some areas I do think the art and writing needs some work.

One of the things we love about Tim it's that he is the detective that the other Robins are not. Meghan, on this take of Robin, it's bringing that side that we love and building a mystery on this new story. I'm looking forward to seeing what's going to happen and the development with Tim.
The art's different and a departure from what we used way to see, Tim. I hope it stays with the same artist before we see a new artist in the book. At least with the first arc.

Tim has needed some Penelope not for years. His last great run was Red Robin. This comic is definitely a start to a narrative life free from the giants that surround him.

The one down side not a fan of the way he’s drawn, but the art is otherwise interesting.

Ok…the storyline was very good - the three stars are for that. Thee artwork, however, gets 0 stars as it is just terrible. That’s not Tim Drake or anyone I recognize. I guess art is different in everyone’s eyes and this one was just way too different for my eyes.

This miniseries is a key story of Tim Drake coming to terms with being gay (or bisexual?). (In vol. 6 he kisses his "boyfriend.") The gay readership will be sorely disappointed with the awful artwork by Riley Rossmo -- figures are boneless, disproportionate, and look like they're made of melted wax with faces caved in, distorted heads, missing feet and fingers, and all sorts of illogical foreshortening. Yeah, yeah, I know the style is intentionally "cartoony," but it's misplaced with this series. The Tim Drake/Robin character (and boyfriend) could have been sexy and more mature as drawn (superbly) by Miguel Mendoza in Batman 131-133, published at the same time as this Tim Drake miniseries.

The story was interesting. The unknown villain's use of old detective stories involving animals should prove to be interesting. Tim/Bernard story is continuing nicely.

The only thing I didn't like was the artwork. I'm used to the way comics were drawn. When they looked like people. The art is not meant to be realistic, and I can see how it fits the story, but it's not to my liking.

I'm so happy to see Tim getting his own run, it's really been too long! I loved the use of colors, and the art style is adorable, except for how flat Tim's hair is lolol it's been awhile since I've been consistent with a comic but I have high hopes for this one :))
