There are remasterd releases and box sets....then there's Tim Let It Bleed.

Tim was my least favorite Mats album of the Bob Stinson era. I hated the way it sounded. Although my favorite songs, Kiss Me On The Bus and Left of the Dial were on it, it just sounded over produced with all the slick and glossy effects provided by original producer Tommy Ramone. This new mix has them sounding more powerful than ever.

Step in Ramones producer Ed Stadium.
Tommy Ramone had the Replacements in suits and tuxes. Ed put them in jeans and flannel. His mix of Tim is a HUGE difference in comparison.

The BIGGEST difference out the gate is weight. Tommy's bass and Chris' drum kit dominate!!! The band sound is powerful. I heard harmonies and guitar parts I had never heard before. AND....there's a Bob Stinson lost guitar solo at the end of Little Mascara.

You will most definitely forget about the original album. This is a 4 disc set. The remix is such an improvement that it's the FIRST disc of the set followed by the remastered version of the original album then a disc of outtakes, alternate and demo bonus stuff and then a concert. The concert disc isn't as good as Live at Maxwell, but it's so nice to have something of them tearing it up live. The reason to buy this if for the Ed Stadium remix. I kept putting it off, but glad I finally got it. Worth every penny. HIGHLY recommended!

The Replacements had a troubled existence and, when fame arrived, it didn’t improve it (as it so rarely does); co-founder Bob Stinson was fired or quit (depending on who tells the story) with drugs and alcohol continuing to cause tension within the band. So, in other words, the classic rock success story.

“Tim” was Stinson’s last with the band and it remains one of their pivotal albums. Sure, Paul Westerberg would further develop as a songwriter and go on to top 40 success but this album marked a turning point for the band. ‘Mats fans have always loved “Tim” but, depending on who you speak with, the murky sonics either enhanced or hurt the band’s album. Ed Stasium’s remix here improves the album but, for fans that want the original, its release (represented by a 2023 remaster) is also here.

There’s a disc of previously released and unreleased outtakes which includes early versions of songs for the next album in demo form. Also included is a live show from Chicago recorded January 11, 1986 as well as a vinyl version of the remixed album.

The oversized packaging is roughly the size of an LP (a little bigger) and there’s a booklet with an excellent essay. The only thing that could have improved this set would be a Blu-ray or DVD with an Atmos or 5.1 mix of the original album. Rhino never includes those. I am happy they’ve done this reissue (and it is more reasonably priced than many boxes like this although including the vinyl seems like just an excuse to raise the price as most folks who listen to vinyl are less likely to want the CDs and vice versa). Nevertheless, kudos to Rhino for curating this set.

After all these the years the ‘Mats are still inexplicably under appreciated. No band of that era created music that captured a true punk/indie spirit combined with incredible melodies courtesy of the genius songwriting of Paul Westerberg. While many of their early releases had glimpses of this level of songwriting it wasn’t until Tim that the band reached their peak. There are no fillers, no comedic jams that got thrown on to the record. It’s excellent from start to finish.

When Tim was released the listener heard amazing songs that were poorly mixed, which had never been so evident as when you listen to the new Tim - Let It Bleed edition. The Ed Stasium mix brings out the vocals and separates the instruments where you can now hear all the elements within each song. Stasium did an absolutely terrific job of polishing up the mix to let us finally hear the ‘Mats as they sounded at their best back in the day. The Disc 1 featuring the Stasium remix is with the price of the box set.

Other highlights include Disc 3, featuring demos and alternate mixes of the time in the studio. It’s a fun listen, though many of the songs are still pretty raw. But that’s the beauty of this band, even raw they still sound amazing.

Disc 4 features a batch of songs from a live show at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago from early 1986. While not quite as revelatory as the previously released live show For Sale: Live at Maxwell’s 1986 this disc captures the band in one of their better live performances.

If you want to hear the most incredible band of the 1980’s that you never heard of, get this box set and see just what you were missing.

The Ed Stasium remix makes this essentially a new album and it takes a little while to adjust if you have been listening to the original for decades. After a few weeks of replaying it, I prefer the new mix decisively for all of the hard rocking songs. For a couple of the slower songs, the original mix has a certain faraway, downcast mood that the new mix kind of breaks up, but because both mixes are available and remastered beautifully, you can listen for yourself and decide. Essential, contemporary non-album tracks, outtakes, and live recordings round out this phenomenal collection. If you have been a 'Mats fan for a long time, trust me, this one is worth the money. If you are new, this is one of the finest rock albums of the 80s and a great place to start.

I've picked up almost all of these deluxe 'Mats reissues and, for me, this is the best by a mile. The Ed Stasium mix of the album is worth the price of admission alone, but the bonus tracks are also excellent. It really does feel like a whole new record and this new mix might have put Tim at the top of the list as my favourite Replacements record now. I should mention as well that the whole package is beautifully designed, and the book and liners are fantastic. We've really been spoiled with these reissues and this one tops 'em all
