What's missing? 1) The bottom right pocket is large enough, but the opening isn't. I can't even fit my kindle paperwhite in there (no case). And if I COULD, rest assured it would be a nightmare to get out. An extra half-inch on that zipper would have been extremely useful. This also means if you have a small book you want in there that is as wide as a paperwhite, it won't fit. The pocket is tall and wide enough, but the zipper opening is not. The pocket isn't useless, but it's extremely limited. 2) There's no side handle/strap to comfortably allow for horizontal carrying. You can only vertically hand hold the bag. 3) The nylon handle for vertical carrying should have been padded like the shoulder straps. 4) The main compartments have adequate volume, but suffer from not having another elastic pocket. It's like having a large fridge without a shelf. If you want to put a jacket in there, it has to go on top of your books. That means to access books, you have to first remove your jacket or vice versa. You can imagine other scenarios that become a little annoying.
Those things aside, it's a great bag, but it doesn't warrant a 5-star review imo. If there were only one issue, it would get 4 stars. There are too many limitations for me to give it that. I would look forward to the next iteration.
The bag looks more narrow than the typical backpack and that is true. I personally like it. If you are trying to carry three binders in the middle pocket then forget it. Two should fit if you stack them right. The different colored versions actually use different fabrics. The green one uses a faux leather material for the three front pockets, which does not match the material for the rest of the bag. The black version uses nylon materials throughout and is the one I settled on.
I am surprised that in all of the reviews, no one brought up the issue with the laptop padding. The front and back of that compartment are more than sufficiently padded, but the sides are not. So if something hard hits your bag from the side, there is nothing between that and the computer but the fabric of the bag. Now, that has never happened to me in twenty years of owning these laptops. But if you worry about your laptop tumbling down the side of a mountain, for example, then this won't be the bag for you, and the STM Impulse has better cushioning.
- Waterproof rubber on the inside of all the front pockets. Makes me feel much more comfortable about putting my valuables or electronics & not needing to worry that rain will ruin them.
- A lot of great functional pockets.
- Good back support, along with a strap that attaches across your chest.
- Love how the computer pocket is designed, and especially the adjoining fleece pocket that is handy for an eReader or tablet.
- Only one con, which is that I wish there was also a strap that could attach at the waist. This would make supporting any weight of the backpack much easier.
I love timbuk2 bags - I have several messenger bags.
If you like a lot of compartments like me - you'll love this one.
And the chest strap can be used to hook this bag to the trolley handle so you can handle yourself in ease.
And it also has ventilated back, so the heat will hit you - but not too much.
My only request are a few more pockets and zippers I can loop a lock through -- handy when traveling through a high pick-pocketing train station.
Overall, the colors great and the bag light. Thanks Timbuk2 :)
