I expected it to be big and tough. I found that it is a lot smaller than I expected. My laptop does fit and that is good. I carry around a lot of different cables and gadgets and even though this backpack is small all of my stuff fits, that is good too. The straps are too close together at the top and that makes it uncomfortable to wear. I have adjusted them up and down, but I have not been able to find a comfortable spot. I like that it only has one large compartment. It is minimal and efficient. I like that, bu the comfort issue is almost a deal breaker.
It seems to be put together well, but the material seems very thin. I will be surprised if it lasts over a year. If it does, I might revise my review and give it another star, but only if I can find a way to adjust the straps to make it more comfortable. If I was not in dire need, I would probably send it back.
Edit 3-1-15: After one week of use, one of the shoulder straps came un-sewn where the bottom adjustment strap is sewed to the top padded part. It had come completely apart before I noticed it. That made the strap useless. I am fortunate that I saw it before the bag fell off my back. The other strap was still holding on. I contacted Amazon. They have sent me a replacement and I have returned the first bag. I will give the Timbuk2 Rouge one more chance. Kudos to Amazon for their great customer service. Not much good to say about Timbuks2 at this point. Maybe that will change.
Edit 8-20-15: I have used this for six months now and I am pleasantly surprised at how well the replacement backpack has held up. I keep it crammed full with my computer, cables, adapters and such. I have treated it as roughly as I have treated my previous Targus bag that I had for years. If this bag holds up for a year, I will give it another star.
Edit 3-24-16. I have treated it roughly and it has held up well. I have had it for over a year and, as promised, I have given it another star.
It has a military vibe, with a strip of Velcro loops along the bottom outside edge of the top flap. The top flap and the bottom surface have a vinyl or "leatherette" type of coating on it, which works to deflect moderate rain. I inadvertently tested this in a downpour. It's definitely not designed to be full-on waterproof, but was better than nothing. The flap also has Velcro on the underside, so it keeps in place even if the buckles are not fastened.
(I also got, from Amazon of course, a black Marvel's "Agents of Shield" patch with Velcro hooks on the back and it sticks right on there! Also, I got one of those spec-ops style black/grey American flags with the Velcro back, and that goes right next to the Shield patch. The flag actually has reflective "white" stripes, which makes it nice for pedestrian safety at night, but still looks badass.)
Very durable. I used it every day for three years. Bought this 2nd one because I thought they might discontinue this model.
I don't know if it's my anatomy, but i think the straps for wearing the bag are too closely positioned to each other. It's tight around the neck, especially when riding a bike. Again, maybe it's just me and how i wear it. Maybe it will get comfier w/ usage (well i hope so).
The pack is very rugged and keeps rain out fairly well. I really like the style and I have gotten a few compliments on it. The only issue I have with it is that the laptop sleeve seems a little flimsy for my tastes. I have solved that problem by buying a padded laptop sleeve to give my computer a little more protection.
