I managed to read the final chapter of this lovely book before I passed out drooling on my pillow, the reading lamp still on. It felt like it was a thousand degrees in our house, the AC taking forever to finally work its magic. My middle kid was irritable and woke me from my stupor asking for another tuck in because she was too hot and couldn't turn her brain off. As I stumbled back to bed for the second time, I was sticky, and bloated, and sex was the farthest thing from my mind. Yet, when my fella returned from tucking in our almost-four-year-old son who is finally starting to spend at least half the night in his own bed, I suggested a quickie. A short and sweet little romp with the lights off because life is short, and it's harder than ever to stay connected to what matters. Like extra tuck ins. And sweaty sex before you get interrupted again by little footsteps. I blame Hannah McKinnon for this minor revelation.
Time After Time was the perfect start to my summer reading. It's playful, nostalgic, sexy and clever. As a child of the eighties, I loved all of the nods to great moments in the pop culture of my pubescent years. I loved all of the questions this book asks, all of the what ifs we torture ourselves with when life becomes too complicated with the stuff that doesn't really matter so much. There were real, sweet moments of connection between the delightful characters McKinnon has concocted and I grew attached to these characters within the first couple of chapters, feeling their failures and frustrations as sharply as I shared their victories and their steamy love scenes. I was also struck by the parallels between protagonist Haley's past relationships and my own. I too have dated the controller, the narcissist, and the really sweet guy and I've walked away from all of those to find my own version of happily ever after. Haley's an every gal who even us queer and quirky gals can relate to, which is no small feat for chick lit to serve up.
Time After Time will be an easy book to share with my own circle of gals who love a good, light read. It was the perfect balance of frivolous fun and touching poignancy that changed my life at least enough to squeak in an extra orgasm this week. Kudos to you McKinnon! I can't wait to read more of your writing.
