About the Author

Rebecca Caudill read her first novel when she was just four years old and has been hooked on books ever since. When she wasn't writing her own stories, she was sneaking copies of her mom's romance paperbacks to read late into the night. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Journalism, Rebecca embarked on a career in technology public relations, which led to a stint as an executive communications manager at a Fortune 500 technology company in Silicon Valley. After more than a decade of writing words ascribed to other people, in December 2014 she quit her job to pursue writing full time. Rebecca lives with her husband and beautiful-but-neurotic cat in Oakland, California. When not creating fictional worlds inhabited by strong women, rakes, rogues, and dashing heroes, she is planning her next vacation, trying out new recipes, or drinking Islay scotch.

This is an excellent first novel by Rebecca that pulled me in immediately due to the fascinating story line. I fell in love with the characters and it left me wanting more. I found myself thinking about this story when I wasn't reading it; this is always my indication of a great read. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be transported to another world which is our reason for reading.

Okay so on the one hand the 1st 50% of this story was very interesting. Intriguing. Scary even. Though I didn't really care for how the entirety of the book, the MC's stayed in their heads more often than conversing with one another. This is not usually my thing. I need just as much dialogue as inner monologue. A good balance of the two. I don't want to be told everything at every turn. And I don't fancy being stuck in one or both persons' heads for too long. But because their thoughts weren't really repetitive, and the first half of the book was really enthralling for me, I could over look this.

But once I reached the 65% mark, I was over this way of writing style & I felt that the heroine was way too chill about the revelations given to her. Though they were the truth, and there was no way to really dispute it, she still gave herself over way too easily for my comfort. Only to then turn around and throw a fit concerning the Hero's lifestyle after proclaiming her choice that she was all in. Ergo... pointless angst & drama after the fact.

I just wasn't feeling the second half of this book or the MC's all that well at that point.

So while I think it was a decent read. A different sort of take on a vampire tale, but still keeping close to the "traditions" of the paranormal fanged male; overall it just couldn't completely close the deal for me. I think this mainly has to do with the writing style and the way this sort of tale was executed, though.

So I have no interest in continuing on with this series.

But if you're curious, it's definitely worth a go. This one does not end on a cliffhanger, but it appears that their story does continue in the next book.

Happy Reading :)

In her debut paranormal romance, Rebecca N. Caudill accomplishes something quite exciting: she upends some of the established tropes of the well-loved vampire novel and goes on to create a new hybrid genre! It was completely unexpected yet delightful. Without getting into spoilers, when I read the section where the main protagonist (Olivia) goes through an unusual experience, my reader senses heightened and I said to myself, "Whoa, hold on. This isn't the vampire story that I thought was going to be told!" -- and I became instantly glued to the page. I found myself sneaking pages here and there throughout the day because I wanted to see what came out of that experience. I was not disappointed.

One of my favorite things as a reader is when I can't tell what's coming around the corner. Ms. Caudill managed to do that several times in the story, while still staying consistent in the world she's created in A Time Apart. The relationship between the two protagonists, Olivia and William, has deeper roots than I initially suspected, and I loved finding out their origin story. Even as my expectations of the genre were challenged, the author was able to make the paranormal parts of the story enhance each other and give a deeper glimpse into this particular world of vampires. As this is the first book in the series, it's clear that I'll get a chance to learn far more about the two characters, and I can't wait!

William, the other main protagonist, isn't a "sheep in wolves clothing" that would have been so easy to create. His dark side is not about struggling against the baser needs of his species while hating himself, which I see too commonly; he truly is, in his current state, a monster that is far, far removed from a nice human guy.

This was a page turner of a debut novel by Rebecca that left me wanting more. The story was both witty and steamy. Well rounded characters and intriguing settings were highly engaging. Olivia is strong, clever and somewhat damaged which pulled in this less than regular romance reader and the book really began to shine and the pages in my hands flip once the protagonists began interacting directly. I'm looking forward to the next chapter of this series and to what else Rebecca decides to share with us all!

I haven't read a vampire novel since Dracula as an English major, but I really enjoyed this novel! Parts are a little choppy and it could use another edit, but nothing fatal. A solid first novel.

I get a little squeamish about blood, but the plot line and the characters are very interesting and they kept me engaged and motivated to read to the end. Truly, the more I read, the more I enjoyed it. I was sad when it ended. Her story develops in a way that has me VERY interested to see how this will all play out and how minor characters will develop in the future. Looking forward to Book Two!

There are two indicators that this was a great book - 1. I stayed up until 1 a.m. finishing it. 2. I moaned "noooooooo" when it ended.

While it's hot and steamy, this book also drew me in with the characters. I immediately related to Olivia, who escaped from her "cushy" life after her parents' tragic death to write a novel. I love her tenacity, her strength and her self-awareness. This made her relationship with William a little tough for me to swallow - I have to admit that I wish she had put up even more of a fight.

William still makes me a little nervous, but I hope that future books come soon (hint) so I can find out what the future holds for their lives and love. (Will she still write a book? Who are these enemies of William's? What will she tell her best friend?)
