Editorial Reviews

"Time Candle's story of magic, exhaustion, abandonment and redemption is a powerful addition to the series."---Diane Donovan, Midwest Book Review
Time Candle, Book Three of the Coin of Rulve, series is about twin brothers who have been separated for most of their lives. They are about to encounter each other again. Sheft and Teller may be twins, but they seem nothing alike. One ischarged with duty and truth and the other is the Teller-of-Lies. One has foundlove and the other is alone. While both struggled to survive a harshupbringing, one managed to escape while the other remains haunted.
The forces that separated them bring them together in aclash reflective of a changing world. As each begins to absorb the other'sloneliness, special challenges, and vast differences, they slowly evolve tojoin forces against a poison which threatens their entire world, learning thatthe foundations of their evolving relationship and lessons learned about oneanother may be the last hope the world holds.
Great journeys, the victims of a deadly poison, theerosion of final hope, and issues of forgiveness, justice, and a wounded herocharged with saving a land where "...only those emptied can be filledto the brim" makes for a downward spiral into a crushed world where twobrothers' relationships and backgrounds serve as examples and microcosms ofwhat is to come. What will it take to meld two disparate forces into one in anevent that will either embrace the kingdom and recharge it with hope, or causethe world to succumb?
Whilenewcomers should be able to access and enjoy the story line, it's the priorreader of the Coin of Rulve series who will gain the most from this addition, because it flushes out characters, builds upon prior scenarios, and takesreaders in unexpected directions they may not have prepared for in previousbooks.
The result is highly recommended for fans of the series, weaving a complex blend of psychological challenge and growth into an overallfantasy about peoples and kingdoms on the edge of destruction. All this buildstowards a sweeping climax that will conclude in a final book in the series, with Time Candle carefully crafted to keep readers on the edgeof their seats, anticipating the grand finale.

"Absorbing and utterly entertaining."---Christian Sia,  Readers' Favorite Book Review
Twin brothers, Sheft and Teller, have been separated fora long time, and now they will be meeting each other in an unusual manner andin a very dangerous place. Teller's mission is to bring his brother to the lairof the oppressor, the Spider King. Will he betray his brother or help himescape and reach the place where a small group of resistance forces are workingto set their country free? But things don't follow through as planned, for thetwins find themselves in a deadly situation and poisoned. With only thirteenhours left to live, can their rescuers locate the antidote to the deadly poisonin time to reclaim their lives? And why won't Teller wear the toltyr, thependant that proclaims who he truly is? Time Candle by Veronica Dale is a heartpounding, tantalizing fantasy that is every bit as entertaining as it isexciting.
I was pulled in by the compelling plot, and right from the opening lines I knewI would love this book. A subplot follows the story of Mariat, and that creates the suspense whichmakes this story even more engrossing. Veronica Dale writes with confidence andher prose features a great setting with powerful images. Although the settingis imaginary, it leaves readers with beautiful sights, great smells, and ageography they can easily imagine. Time Candle is character driven, but theplot is boosted by a memorable conflict and the reader gets caught up in theread, watching out for the exciting and satisfying denouement. This book wasabsorbing and utterly entertaining.  Five stars.
"Powerful setting, gripping plot,  and fascinating characters "---Divine Zape, Readers' Favorite Book Review
In a world where a Spider Kingsows terror and oppresses the people, Teller is ordered to bring his brother Sheft tothe king's underworld. Sheft has been expelled by the village council, despoiled, wounded and, with hands and feet tied, is sent away on the back of amare.
Now he meets his twin brother in the dangerous Riftwood. Can Telleraccomplish the mission entrusted to him and bring his brother to the enemy orwill he join him and hasten towards Seani where a group of resistance fightersare waiting? A twist in the story will find the twins racing against time tosave their lives. And what will become of Mariat, captured by fierce boar-men?Can she free herself? Time Candle by Veronica Dale is a fast-paced, tantalizingtale that features a huge conflict and the theme of freedom fromoppression.
The novel exhibits great imagination, from the powerful setting -- aland ripped apart by conflict-- to thegripping plot and the fascinating characters. The story isconflict-driven and, from the very beginning, the reader's curiosity is arousedby the image of the banished and wounded man on the back of a mare. There are many emotional moments in this book, and I read over onenight. It's gripping, absorbing, with a satisfying end. Five stars.
"I found myself quickly enthralled."---Sefina Hawke, Readers' Favorite Book Review
Time Candle by Veronica Dale is an epic fantasy novelthat follows a pair of twins as they fight to survive against the odds. This is a novel that would appeal to a mixed audience ofadults and young adults who enjoy fast-paced fantasy fiction. Teller faces adilemma. He has been ordered to bring his own twin brother, Sheft, into theSpider-King's underground stronghold and must decide if he will followorders and betray his twin, or if he will help Sheft reach the resistance workingto free their country. Each choice will end in a betrayal, and both choiceshave deadly consequences.
I found myself quickly enthralled by Teller as he wasforced to decide where his loyalty lay and which choice he could live with. Ipersonally liked Mariat's character as she showed her strength andability to survive when she went up against the boar-men who held her captive. The element of poison that left the twins with only thirteen hours to livereally added a feeling of deadly suspense to the plot line. Overall, I reallyenjoyed this novel and I hope that Veronica Dale decides to write a follow upnovel. Five stars

From the Author

If you've read Dark Twin, you might remember what the teacher, Se Mena, tried toexplain to her small class of children in the beginning of the book. Like manyothers in their down-trodden country, the people of Shunder were anxiouslyawaiting the niyalahn-ristas, twin brothers who were predicted to save theirland and its children from a despotic ruler, the Spider-king. Some of Mena'sstudents believed that the twins were what we'd today call superheroes.

In the real world, Mena told herstudents, there's no such thing. Even chosen twins, created by Rulve andendowed with power, can't overthrow a despot all by themselves. They absolutelyneed other people to support them, or they will fail. As a mother andgrandmother, Mena knew that heroes, like everyone else, require a communitywhere talents are recognized and respect forms the basis of strength.

Unfortunately, Sheft and Tellerdidn't grow up in such places. Like some of us, they grew up in communitieswhere the elites ran everything, where being different meant you were mistreated, and where addiction, ignorance, and cruelty were the order of the day.
The first two books of this Coin of Rulve series show how Sheft andTeller, feeling a strong call they don't understand, struggle to grow up in themidst of big-time dysfunction. TimeCandle is about how they, wounded healers as they are, finally make ithome. It's about how the people of the Seani, the small community where Sheftand Teller were born, learn what it takes to care for your heroes.

In order to save their saviors, theSeani leaders learn they must step forward and risk everything to accomplish amission greater than all of them. I think this is a lesson many communities, like the Seani in this book, struggle with today. It's hard to push backagainst prejudice, corruption and outright lies, against those who see workingfor the common good as a threat to their power. Increasingly however, we are seeingthat only when we work together can we become the true superheroes, and that themost powerful force on earth is the united human spirit on fire.

Next comes Leaf and Flame, the last book and climax of the Coin of Rulve series.
