Carnegie Olson is a novelist and an independent scholar of comparative mythology, mythography and the psychology of religion. He resides in Ann Arbor but his heart is at home in locales across the cosmos, including those nestled within the past, present and future. For example, he'd enjoy sitting in with the Jena Romantics for lunch in 1799 or so (provided someone could translate the German) or perhaps seafaring shoulder-to-shoulder with Joseph Conrad in the Indian Ocean. Likewise, he'd be thrilled to be assigned cook's duties on a hyper-dimensional space train - anything to get out of the house.

The TIME CRIME series, meanwhile, debuted in 2020. Book 2 arrived in eBook and print in 2022.

Time Crime keeps one's imagination thoroughly engaged while reading the adventures of Mr. Z and Vixy. Through their world travels, Vixy's abduction, Herman Neutic (love the name) uncovering a backstory between Mr. Z and the mothmen, and their further excursions to solve mysteries through time travel, Carnegie Olson depicts a fascinating story exploring different cultures and time periods. I can certainly appreciate the research involved in creating this novel.

I think there's a good story here. But I also think this novel was self-published. That means that no one (or at least no one who wasn't hired by the author) went through and honestly pointed out what needed to be cut, tightened, corrected (like punctuation), and reworked. The protagonist is like one of those guys you meet at a party who knows a lot about a lot of esoteric stuff and backs you in a corner and tells it all to you. A good editor would have pointed out what part of this didn't further the plot. And would have said that quoting long passages written by other authors isn't a great idea. And explained how a few descriptive words can reveal more about a character than a whole paragraph describing everything from buttons to shoes. And advised that the best way to work in exposition is not for the protagonist to attend a lecture. This feels like a good story that needed to go through some additional steps to turn it into a novel one wants to keep reading.

I received this book as a gift and wasn't sure if I'd like it since I don't read much sci-fi. However, I found the story incredibly inspired. The banter between Mr. Z and Vixy is witty and provides comic relief from the more serious crime story. It's an adventure that took me through parts of the world where I've never been but I feel like I've been there. The author's ability to travel in time and space while creating interconnected worlds of conflicting belief systems (or mythologies as he calls them) is a real work of art. The alien at the center of it all struggles with his life choices and through his journey becomes the most endearing character of all.

The best books are the ones that defy categorization. Time Crime is a science fiction tale that blends future and past, mythology, philosophy, and archaeology. The characters are interesting with realistic, believable flaws. The author includes footnotes throughout, and a glossary, which lends to the feeling that this is history, not just historical (science) fiction.
I believe this is Olson's first novel. He is an "independent scholar of comparative mythology, mythography and the psychology of religion," and he puts all of this knowledge to good use in this novel.

The basic story was quite good, but there was some confusing philosophies mixed in with it which I found distracting. I would have liked the story to have continued a little longer, just to clarify the story, and round it off.
