Another fantastic entry in the Daptone/Dunham catalog, and this time it's Charles
Bradley's time to shine, backed up by Dap-Kings guitarist Brenneck and his
supersoulsolid Menahan Street Band.

A voice doesn't come much rawer than Bradley's. The man has definite soul power,
sometimes he hits like a roll of thunder, and it's easy to understand that he
once fronted a James Brown tribute band. The man sure can holler!

In the end I think it sounds a bit too similar to get top honours, and maybe
The Menahan Street band could have taken a more adventurous approach to
some of the songs, but that is a negligible complaint, as you will find a lot
of truly great songs on it.

Standouts: the soul classic The World Is Going Up In Flames, I Believe In
Your Love(with sweet horn stabs, and backing vocals from The Gospel Queens),
No Time For Dreaming, the truly amazing How Long and the album closer,
Heartaches And Pain, a sad, autobiographical tale about a family member
killing his brother.

Put in in the basket. Payday is long overdue for Charles Bradley. Amazon should
even charge you over prize for this one, so we can be assured the man drive
according to his class, in a golden limo soulsmobile.

I can't believe how few reviews there are on Amazon for this fantastic CD.
Real, authentic soul. Gets better with each listen.
You can hear the trials of Bradley's life in every note. This surpasses anything by James Brown in my opinion.
There's Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Al Green and now Charles Bradley is ready to take his place alongside them.
Buy this and you will not regret it.

I was introduced to this record by a former colleague of mine. This is classic soul from a wonderful talent. You can tell Charles Bradley sings from the heart and means every word he sings. What is delivered is a classic sound full of feeling. Credit is also due to the incredible backing band and producer that recreate the sound and vibe of some of the best albums of the 60's / 70's.

This guy.

I mean really, spend your life as a showman doing a James Brown show and then late in life get a break and find your own path. The story alone is amazing.

The music is classic soul and funk.

My only critique is whoever is producing Mr. Bradley, lay off the reverb. So much tinkering around with his voice, not needed. He is not Brittany Spears. He has a voice that carries its own baggage. In the class of Alabama Shakes, he is unique, rich in texture and food for the ear. Please lay off playing with your effects board.

I saw this CD on a Rolling Stone best-of list for year-end CDs. "Lovin' You Baby" is one of my favorite tracks with Bradley's plaintive vocals strong and oozing longing in every bar, "No more bad dreams, baby; No more afraid to open the door and let you in." "How Long" is another favorite of mine with a slow blues groove opening the track and Charles' vocals looking for salvation amidst trials and tribulations, "How long must you keep suffering like this? You know our people are suffering. They're looking for something to look up to; They're looking for a change." The rest of the set is also strong with his version of Neil Young's "Heart of Gold," the title track and "The Telephone Song" catching my ear. Enjoy!

A lot of people have never heard of this guy, and they should. I ended up seeing a video of his online and then bought the album. It's one of those albums that whether your 20 or 60, you will enjoy it forever. And eventually he came to my city to do a concert so I went and saw him, and it was just as good if not better than the album. He is a true musician in a time where those are getting fewer. Buy it if you like soul.

As advertised, or rather hyped, this guy is the real deal. An authentic old school soul singer who puts gallons of sweat and tears into each and every song. Unless, of course, it's an instrumental, and then Menahan Street Band take control and blow the roof off the house. Wow! This album is full of passionate and soulful tunes. Nothing wimpy about Bradley or his band. The cover of "Heart of Gold" may be the most mellow thing on here, but even that one has buckets of soul slathered all over it. It's followed by a fearsome cover of Nirvana's "Stay Away", perhaps my least favorite track on here, but still worth a listen. Pain, heartache, joy, and laughter. Charles Bradley has no doubt experienced it all, and he paints a rainbow of emotions in his songs. If, like me, you grew up on 60s and 70s soul music, you NEED to listen to this guy.
