About the author

Nadiya Hussain rose to fame after winning the sixth series of The Great British Bake Show. She was one of the most memorable contestants ever due to her captivating smile and inspirational winner's speech. Since winning, Nadiya's career has gone from strength to strength. She has presented many cookery shows for the BBC including Nadiya's British Food Adventure, Nadiya's Family Favourites and her latest Time to Eat which is now also on Netflix. Nadiya has also presented food travelogues including The Chronicles of Nadiya and Nadiya's Asian Odyssey. She has also co-presented The Big Family Cooking Showdown and Junior Bake Off. Her cookery books and cookery/story books for children have reached bestseller status and include Time to Eat, Nadiya's Family Favourites, Nadiya's British Food Adventure, Nadiya's Kitchen and the Nadiya's Bake Me a Story trilogy. Nadiya has also written three novels - The Secret Lives of the Amir Sisters, The Fall and Rise of the Amir Sisters and The Hopes and Triumphs of the Amir Sisters. Her first picture book, My Monster and Me, was published in October 2019, as was Finding My Voice, an emotive look at the different roles Nadiya plays in her life and how they have shaped her. Her latest cookery book - Nadiya Bakes - will be published in the UK in September 2020. Her new picture book - Today I'm Strong - will be published in October 2020.

Her focus is preparing meals ahead of time as well, and has helped me think of better ways to use my cooking time. She has introduced new spicing as well. I have a lot of cookbooks, but this is the rare one I go back to and get tempted to try another recipe. My husband agrees. Though I no longer have small children at home, she does, and is good at thinking about their tastes and saving the cook's time.
Some recipes are printed so you can make a smaller batch without affecting the result and don't have to do the calculations. I recommend the videos for further background. For example, she shows how Marmite is made by going to the producer. I'd no idea it was the recycling of brewing products. She is clear, modest, and warm, so different from some of the patriarchal chefs. I highly recommend this book for you and to give away.
One of my main reasons for wanting to leave this review is for American fans. I bought this book preparing for the recipes to be in the metric measurements. This wasn't a deal breaker for me. I simply planned to print a conversion table out and tape to the inside of the book.
However, unlike many of the reviews have stated, my cookbook came with the recipes in US measurements. The only thing I can think is that perhaps the book's initial release was only UK based as Nadiya herself is, but once it was officially released in the US, they made the corrections for the US version. Whatever the reasoning, everything is worked out for the US audience as well now, no conversion tables needed. So if you read those reviews and it was the only thing holding you back from purchasing, rest assured in your purchase now!
The dessert section in particular is just merely ok. I probably will stop picking things from there and move on to another book that I've had more success with. The black pepper cake tastes ok, but mine wouldn't rise and tore in four pieces coming out of the (very well greased) pan. The barfi truffles were, again, just ok- they certainly weren't anything I would call a truffle and I won't be making them again. For breakfast goods, many of the recipes are just subtly... off. Additionally, a lot more recipes than I expected were straight from her Netflix show without any alteration.
I think part of the problem, especially for the baked goods, is the conversion to American volume-based measurements instead of the weight-based measurements I'm almost certain the book's recipes were tested with. Both sets of measurements were included and maybe I'd have had more success if I'd used the weights, but I'm a lazy American and used the cups and Tbsps I'm used to using.
Overall, a few of the recipes were great, but I've never in my life had so many 'just ok' recipes, mismatched descriptions, and outright flops from the same book (and I'm an *avid* cook). For this book I wish I'd waited and checked it out from the library instead of purchasing.

This cookbook / publication is easy to read and follow. I appreciate the appealing photos and that it is not printed in light colored ink that’s harder for those with imperfect eyesight. Highly recommend this one. It routinely gets brought out, along with a Skinny Taste favorite.
Conversions are in the book and...so easy to follow. I'm afraid my kid is going to steal it when he moves out.
