Michael is the quintessential artist of what jazz improvisation and expression is all about. His articulation and tone are beautiful. I'm happy that I got to see him in concert. "Time is of the Essence", with Pat Metheny, guitar, Larry Goldings, organ and Elvin Jones on drums, is a perfect collaboration. The opening song, "Arc of the Pendulum", sets the tone for the album with its uptempo, energetic and smokin' interaction between the soloists. The rest of it follows suit. The addition of Larry Goldings on organ is a perfect blend. This is definitely one of Michael's best.

This is a great album for drummers. Listen to 2 cuts each by Bill Stewart, Jeff 'Tain' Watts and the legendary Elvin Jones. You might want to listen before you read the liner notes and see if you can pick out which track has which drummer. I didn't get them all corrrect but did OK. Also, the drumming on this CD is really really good. Pick it up, listen, enjoy.

This album is the real deal.

Brecker leads the charge, this time with Larry Goldings on organ, and familiar sideman Metheny on guitar. In my opinion, they hit the ball out of the park on this one.

This time, the focus is really on the music. Often, I think Brecker gets caught up in demonstrating the state of the Tenor (Delta City Blues, My One and Only Love) as only he can. For this one, it's an all hands on deck team effort. The arrangements are great, but it's the hard driving swing that makes this record groove. I think it's absolutely one of Brecker's finest efforts. And check out the drummers on this one. Theey get a chance to really shine, where the songs are well suited to their individual strengths.

Elvin Jones plays like a god, providing herculean drive and swing as always. But, Stewart and Watts match his intensity (as much as anyone else could.)

Goldings is terrific here, and Metheny plays fine as usual. But he also shows a little extra edge, which is always nice.

At the time this came out, I remember a quote by Brecker about how he wore out a few copies of Unity by Larry Young, which featured Joe Henderson's fine Tenor playing matched with Young's organ. With Time of the Essence, Brecker (whether intentional or not) creates a fine tribute to Youngs landmark recording. On Time is of the Essence, Brecker and company created their own matserpiece worthy of comparison.

Michael Brecker was one of the most important saxophonists of the 20th century wonderful and extremely virtuous. His way of improvising is absolutely particular and this time he is accompanied by great celebrities of the jazz that Pat Metheny, Larry Goldings, Elvin Jones etc. A great album, no doubt.

This in my opinion is actually breckers best solo album. It features excellent composistions, particularly tracks 4,5 and 6.
brecker is in mine and a lot of peoples opinion the greatest saxophonist since the death of trane, and this album above all others shows why.
the only issue is that goldings and methany spend way too long soloing, particularly metheny. it will piss of anyone who like me got the album for brecker, even though they are great players. It deprives brecker of the chance of extended solos, his forte.
if you like this album, get infinity by mccoy tyner which feateres brecker at his best, and do not get the brecker brothers, they suck balls

Quand paraît ce disque du saxophoniste Michael Brecker (en 1999 sous le label Verve), je suis littéralement scotché par ce que j’y découvre et entends. « Time Is Of The Essence » est en effet un disque mythique, devenu « culte », d’une saveur incomparable, un disque foisonnant, dont les écoutes successives confirment son niveau d’excellence. Michael Brecker (1949-2007) était vraiment un « extra-terrestre ». Une sonorité ample, un phrasé colossal et un sacré souffle. Lors de sa publication, toutefois, deux sortes de critiques paraissent dans les magazines spécialisés. D’abord, il y a celle de Jazzman (« Choc ») qui insiste sur le fait que le saxophoniste le plus coltranien de sa génération (avec Dave Liebman…) y est fort convaincant, donnant matière et substance à un disque hyper décoiffant et très accrocheur. L’un des plus généreux de sa discographie. Jazz mag est quant à lui beaucoup plus réservé. Pour ces derniers, Brecker « manque de spontanéité » et « continue de redéfinir une sonorité et un phrasé devenus banals à force d’être copiés » (sic). Propos ambigus… Certes, Brecker fait école, et ça n’est pas du free jazz, mais l’ensemble sonne avec une rage contenue et une maîtrise époustouflante. Le répertoire est par ailleurs superbe. Mais dire que Brecker y est peu spontané, c’est à mon avis un jugement à l’emporte pièce… On a souvent reproché au saxophoniste d’être trop « technique », mais cela ne l’empêche pas de nous émouvoir (comme ici). En tout cas, pour moi, ce disque est une perle. Celui que je préfère du saxophoniste.

De comparer en outre le saxophone de Michael Brecker à celui de John Coltrane me paraît toujours un peu exagéré, voire facile (et donc réducteur). Les deux hommes n’ont pas vraiment la même sonorité. Personnellement, je le rapprocherais davantage d’Eddie Harris (auteur du remarquable The In Sound ) ou mieux, de Hadley Caliman . Quant au disque lui-même, il s’inscrit dans la continuité de toutes ces perles parues sous le label Blue Note dans les années 60 et qui présentaient la même configuration : à savoir le quartet de saxophone ténor, avec orgue Hammond, guitare et batterie (l’excellent Into Somethin’ de Larry Young, avec Sam Rivers, me vient parfois à l’esprit)… Le répertoire comprend neuf pièces marquées rythmiquement, inoubliables en termes mélodiques. 69 minutes de musique à la fois roborative et tendre. La réussite de l’album tient enfin à un répertoire fort bien composé et interprété. Le genre de session studio dont la perfection ne fait pas de doute. Aucune faute de goût. Techniquement c’est irréprochable. Et puis bien sûr, les musiciens qui entourent Brecker sont magnifiques : Larry Goldings est à l’orgue Hammond, Pat Metheny à la guitare et enfin, selon les plages, on trouve le légendaire Elvin Jones (sur trois titres), le cogneur Jeff « Tain » Watts , ou encore l’excellent et très fin Bill Stewart . Autant dire un carré d’as remarquable et une sacrée leçon de swing.

Les pièces bien juteuses s’envolent et me laissent des souvenirs impérissables. Toutes sont superbes, en termes de construction harmonique (comment ne pas chavirer à l’écoute de « As I Am », avec cette introduction bouleversante en duo entre Metheny et Brecker, un truc à vous prendre les tripes ? Ou encore « Renaissance Man », l’un des thèmes les plus enthousiasmants de la galette, pour ne pas dire l’un des plus jubilatoires, avec un Pat Metheny décoiffant et un Bill Stewart en rythmes impairs sur la ride?). Le sens de l’écoute des musiciens et leurs inspirations ne font aucun doute. « Time Is Of The Essence », au détour d’une mélodie, par son ambiance musquée et groovy (écoutez Elvin Jones sur « Outrance », sa palette sonore, sa polyrythmie, comment le batteur pousse le saxophoniste dans ses derniers retranchements !) s’avère être, au final, un chef-d’œuvre de musicalité absolue. L’un des plus grands disques estampillés « jazz » des années 90. Si vous êtes mélomane ou musicien, si vous aimez un jazz à la fois musclé et tendre, si pour vous le jazz se doit d’être une expérience sonore doublée d’un plaisir d’écoute indéniable, alors vous serez comblé avec cette perle qui au fil des années se bonifie, et n’a rien perdu de ses saveurs. La musique y est certes très « accessible » mais moins « soul » que dans les disques de Jimmy Smith avec Kenny Burrell et Stanely Turrentine ( Back at The Chicken Shack et Midnight Special par exemple). La galette de Brecker est cela dit d’une sincérité troublante.

(1) Ce fut le seul disque de Michael Brecker dans cette configuration (et pour moi « Time is of The Essence » est clairement mon disque préféré du saxophoniste). A ce propos, on notera la technique infaillible de Larry Goldings, on l’admirera aussi quand il se sert aussi bien des mains que des pieds pour appuyer ses effets de basse. Impressionnant, là encore. Bref, un disque « indispensable » (de mon point de vue) et que je suis toujours ravi de réécouter. A bon entendeur ! ;)
