Quite some years ago I found this book in my parents library and have had a more open mind to war history since that time. Walter Benjamin once said "history is written by the victors" and much of the real stories of second world war have been racist and biassed. Human nature is rarely objective in these matters, and indeed should I have lost a loved one or had been imprisoned in a Japanese war camp I may hope that my loathing would have effect for as many lifetimes as those lost.
Allan Clifton seems to have written from the heart his personal experience and love for Japan and its people, which is a good thing. Segwaying into political commentary at a time when it was all but a crime may have lost him many friends as much of what he related was treason is many survivors eyes. Mr. Clifton seems to highlight, quite reasonably, the inappropriate and illegal behavior of many BCOF troops who, like all soldiers throughout time, had felt that it was their prerogative to plunder, rape and pillage. His timing may have been imperfect, but history proved him correct, it seems.
