Every jazz aficionado dreams of finding an album that uniquely distinguishes itself by artistically transcending the thousands of albums less rewarding, less memorable, and less accomplished. Miles Davis' preeminent album, "Kind of Blue", is generally accepted as an unprecedented album of such refinement and rarity. It's doubtful if any album will ever depose Davis' scintillating gem from 1959, but Sandoval's "A Time for Love" certainly reaches heights reserved only for albums of consummate distinction. Similar to Davis' album, the music on "A Time for Love" is so emotionally eloquent and moving, vestiges of its allure remain in the mind long after hearing these standards from Gershwin, Mercer, and Porter as well as classical compositions from Faure, Piazolla, and Ravel. Sandoval is trumpeter supreme as he superbly coaxes restrained beauty from each of the fourteen songs.
This is an album not to be missed. Even if you don't purchase it, at least listen to it in its entirety as full length songs on Rhapsody or at the public library. Chris Botti, Monica Mancini, Shelly Berg, and Kenny Barron make notable contributions to the album, but it is the passion and purity of Sandoval's execution that leaves a lasting impression of his exquisite tonal expression. Unlike Miles Davis' album, the substance of this album is not "groundbreaking". Nevertheless, these tunes have a sound and style just as captivating. The accompaniment by a fine rhythm section along with sparse and subdued orchestral arrangements, key elements chosen for this music, contribute appreciably to these melodies. The renditions of both pavanes, one shared with Chris Botti, are fraught with heart-felt lyricism. "A trumpet and flugelhorn designed specifically for this project" brings forth the supremacy of Sandoval's masterful sound. His album, "A Time for Love", is one for the ages, perhaps, a classic, always to be acknowledged and treasured as one of the elite few.

What you usually expect from Sandoval is trumpet fireworks, screaming into the highest trumpet range (a la Maynard Ferguson). That's fine and certainly impressive. But sometimes I am in the mood for beautiful ballads, which is what this CD offers. Think of it as the perfect music for a candle lit diner with your sweetheart--especially if you are fond of trumpet.
Oh, just for the record, Sandoval listened to Bobby Hackett's cornet, when he was a boy--music that he adored. He may have been channeling Hackett. Hackett played a lot of dixieland, but you can occasionally find a romantic CD. Try Bobby Hackett Plays Tony Bennett. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q80I2C4?ie=UTF8&keywords=bobby%20hackett%20tony%20bennett&qid=1452464429&ref_=sr_1_2&sr=8-2

If you love Jazz and particularly trumpet, accompanied by gorgeous orchestrations, this is of the best. If you don't know Arturo Sandoval, you are missing out. This album is completely introspective. No hard Jazz. Just beautiful melodic, harmonic, intricate, sweet music. This album will fill you intellect and your heart. Arturo wanted to make one album like that and here it is. If you just want to make love by it, this will do the trick. But, for the musician, it is the tops.

I was very impressed when I listened to the samples of this CD on Amazon. After I received it in the mail, I immediately played it and was totally delighted.
Not only are the song selections excellent but the arrangements and the performance by all of the musicians involved in this project are first class.
Sandoval's playing is superb. Phrasing, tone, improvisations are outstanding. Some of these songs, with which I'm quite familiar (having played them myself) are given a fresh, new life. It's one of my top favorite albums of all time.
I recommend the purchase of this beautiful CD album to everyone who loves jazz ballads.

IT IS WELL KNOWN THAT ARTURO SANDOVAL IS ONE OF THE GREATIST LIVING TRUMPET PLAYERS. HE EXCELLS AT ALL TYPES OF PLAYING FROM CLASSICAL TO JAZZ. ALTHOUGH HE IS ALSO WELL KNOWN FOR SCREECHING HIGH NOTES AND FURIOUSLY FAST IMPROVISATIONS, ON THIS CD HE LAYS BACK AND TASTEFULLY PERFORMS THE CHOSEN BALLADS. I ESPECIALLY LOVE HIS RENDITION OF "EMILY". THE GUEST VOCALISTS A WELL AS ARTURO'S VOICE PERFORM TASTEFULLY AS WELL.
IF YOU LOVE JAZZ BALLADS, PUT THIS CD ON , SIT BACK AND ENJOY !!

I really love a smooth, mellow trumpet. I would compare Arturo Sandoval to Chris Botti in that Arturo uses a string orchestra behind his trumpet, whereas someone like Rick Braun does not. Arturo has a nice, crisp, smooth sound and is a real joy to listen to. I listen to mostly Chris Botti and Rick Braun (Rick being my favorite since no strings) when listening to a jazz trumpet and this was my first time to purchase an Arturo Sandoval CD and I have really enjoyed it.

I have been following Arturo since his days with Irakere and concerts in "The Place" in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico as well as the Heineken Jazz Fest. The public tends to venerate trumpet players for their ability to play highly acute notes as well as speed (Bee-Bop) and so on. Being the exceptionally gifted musician he is, Arturo excels in all these aspects; being also from the Caribbean, rhytm is also embeded within his DNA.
However, eventhough the trumpet is not associated to soft music, properly played, it can be a tremendously romantic instrument. In this sense Arturo presents his exquisite soft side, (I believe that it is more challenging to express in this mood than in the rhytmic extravaganzas).
A "Time for Love" is a deeply introspective and mellow recording, with an exquisite selection of themes. Do not play this CD as background music, because inevitably you will quit whatever you are doing and dedicate yourself to istening... !!
Only wish he had included in this CD, the piece "What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life" from Michelle Legrand (A good frien of him) played in the Fluggel Horn. I had the opprotunity of listening his arrangement more than 20 years ago and still remember it.
Enjoy a rare, exquisite piece of music.
