Starred Review. In the wake of his death after a long battle with stage four pancreatic cancer, Swayze's memoir offer new information on his heroic fight as well as his legendary career in Hollywood. Along with his wife, Lisa, Swayze recounts his childhood and his first acting experiences as well as his romantic life and personal battles. The writing is as raw, intense, and honest as it gets, and hearing Swayze's voice once more is deeply moving. His delivery is as professional as his attitude, as passionate as his personality. While there is no shortage of emotion, listeners will find this to be less dirge than a celebration of Swayze's life and achievements. An Atria hardcover. (Oct.)

What I liked most about this book is that is focuses on his early life and his career up to his diagnosis. I didn't realize that Swayze had danced ballet professionally, though I knew he was a dancer. I enjoyed reading about his experiences while working and why he chose to make the films he did. He definitely wasn't as prolific as some actors and it's because he make movies he really believed in, even if they weren't mega blockbusters. He could have made many more movies if he had allowed himself to be typecast but he really didn't want that. He liked to make different kinds of films to stretch his abilities and to learn new things.
I also enjoyed reading about his relationship with his wife. They had their problems but they worked things out together through it all. In a time when a lot of Hollywood marriages don't last more than a few years, it's refreshing to read about a couple who truly loved, respected, and supported each other.
I have always enjoyed memoirs and autobiographies. Call it my nosy nature but I like the behind the scenes info people share about their lives that I wouldn't otherwise get to know. I would have liked a bit more background on his family and I certainly felt that the loss of their baby could have gotten more than a couple of paragraphs but I imagine that even all those years later, it must have been incredibly difficult to write about.
Overall, I'm glad I read the book but it makes me sad too, to think of the loss of such a talented man, gone much too soon.
This book is an emotional roller coaster, having me laugh one moment only to flip the page and leave me with tears in my eyes on the next. You never truly see just how mortal and entirely "human" celebrities are until you find great, fulfilling, wholehearted reads like these and how well put together it is. Patrick had an amazingly full life - one that people like myself only dream of having but I love the sincerity and truth he provides in this book about his faults and his struggles.
Yesterday would've made Patrick's 65th Birthday and I truly am still in awe at his immense talent, incredible looks and breathtaking spirit - even 8 years after his passing.
I hope 80 years from now he's putting a twinkle in the eye of the next generations. He's earned it. Even to this day I can't believe he is gone.
This is a must read. 5 stars isn't enough.
It was an enjoyable book
I would recommend both books to everyone. I plan on reading mine again and again. After learning so much about him, I now find myself wanting to spend every spare minute looking up stories about him on You Tube. On my way to and from work most days, I plug my phone into my truck so I can listen to his interviews and tributes and cry like a baby. Thank goodness for waterproof mascara! He was a wonderful man, cowboy, dancer, actor, singer, songwriter, etc that will be truely missed. I wish he would have made it to find a cure for his awful disease but I give LIsa credit for making the choice to allow him to stop his suffering. Even a strong man like Patrick can't take everything his disease had to dish out. We'll never forget you Patrick!
