This book is very inspiring. I personally have hEDS - Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. This book speaks about overcoming obstacles placed in our path to wellness. From personal experience I unfortunately know just how painful, emotionally and physically, it can be when you know in your gut that something is wrong and no one will listen to you or help you. I went seven years without my PCP even sending me for a simple X-ray or MRI when complaining of excruciating pain in my back, neck and joints. I was just diagnosed as Chronic Pain. It was so easy for him to do a general diagnosis than actually helping me.
Seven years of being treated as a drug seeker, despised and disgusted, people would just look at me and shake their head. I had to forge ahead on my own to get my diagnosis because I knew in my very soul that something was severely wrong with my health. I became my own physician. I had to do my own workup, find my own specialists and still have the task of educating people with their actual license on my illness. Not only did they find I had hEDS but multiple herniated discs, 2 cervical, 1 slipped disc requiring surgery, neuropathy, degenerative disc disease, plantar fasciitis, hemorrhagic cysts, multiple small fibroids, and so much more. That's a lot. I am now being made to see a geneticist, waiting on referral now, to rule out vascular EDS which is deadly. I am eager to do the test.
I am in pain every single day. I look like the terminator or Laura Croft due to the multiple braces I wear. I suffer multiple dislocations each month, constant muscle spasms and just so much more. Even though my PCP didn't care about me, I cared about myself and the children so not getting to the source of my health issues was simply not an option. Seven years and then two years later, I am still in pain but there is one major difference in my life - I NOW have a diagnosis and know what to do. When I saw a complex diseases expert, it only took him one visit to diagnosis my hEDS and more. It was a 2.5 hr. visit and he listened intently. I had to find my expert myself and I am so grateful for him. Like these women, I had to overcome many obstacles and now I have the reward of such hard work; diagnosis and plan.
As lonely as our journeys may have felt, as much as our challenges are ours alone, here is a choir of voices reminding us that we are in no way alone, that we can do it, that we can indeed rise, rise to our own authentic humanity and finally spread our wings. I’m deeply moved, and grateful...
This novel inspired me to reach into my own heart and find the courage to beat to my own drum, take the road less travelled and never listen to the outside noise of doubt.
When faced with a crossroads, may you forever recognize the Time to Rise.
