By Jeannie Mancini VINE VOICE on November 1, 2010
Format: Hardcover
In the year 1912, 16 year old Liam O'Connor is a steward onboard the Titanic as it is about to plunge to the frozen ocean depths. 19 year old Madeline is approached midflight with a warning that the plane she is on in the year 2011, is about to crash. 13 year old Saleena, trapped in a burning building, was about to die a horrible death in a fire in 2066. All three of these teenagers are miraculously plucked from death by a mysterious time traveler from the future named Foster. Rescuing them at the imminent time of their individual fatal accidents that would have killed them, Foster reaches out and fetches them, bringing them to New York City in the year 2001. After their initial shock subsides Foster informs them that in the future the advanced technology of time travel has been perfected, and that there are sinister forces at work playing with time and wreaking havoc with history.

Sal, Maddy and Liam have been chosen for a Time Rider Team, selected for their individual talents and skills to work with the organization now for the benefit of future mankind. Sal is excellent at pattern recognition, Maddy is a computer whiz, and Liam is an excellent espionage operative. Together, the trio, with the added help of a half human half robot support unit called Bob, must learn to recognize time shifts, locate the point and place in time that is being messed with, and then go back and fix it.

This Science Fiction debut novel by Alex Scarrow was outstanding!! His plot and story outline use a very clever new concept for fictional time travel, his characters are very real and endearing, there's lots of action, suspense, and some very funny humor to boot. I absolutely loved this first book in Scarrow's new series and eagerly await the second installment. For fans of Time Travel stories, this is a cut above the rest and very different. Two thumbs up for creativity and great entertainment.

I found the book Time Riders by Alex Scarrow on the new book shelf at our town library. I was immediately drawn to the book because I love time travel. This book looked very promising.

This book centers around three teenagers who were destined to die in terrible tragedies but were spared that fate by taking the hand of a stranger from the future. When Foster shows up seconds prior to their demise they are given two choices, join him and the agency called Time Riders or die the death they are about to die. Liam, Maddy and Sal choose to follow him and find themselves in a different time preparing to enter training to become protectors of time. They discover they are chosen for certain skills they have. They are joined by one more unique member of their team and begin their training. Before long they notice a shift in time and, even though they don't feel ready, need to discover when the time line changed so they can change it back.

I have to tell you, I had a hard time putting this book down. It was very action packed and suspensful. What is going to happen to the team members left in the field office where the earth they are now on is no where like the one they had gotten used to, the real timeline, while their team memebers are back in time trying find out what went wrong? However, I did feel there were parts of this book that didn't mesh quite right. In their training they go to a certain event in history and prevent it from happening, which changes the future where the other team members are sitting looking for any slight changes. Supposedly the agency uses this time period because the events are "self correcting.

I am a big fan of the author's works but it has taken me a long time to try his Young Adult timeriders series. I have read a number of books like this one, about policing the time stream and the alternative futures that can be caused by messing with the past. Here the author has a team of yougsters (never really explains why they had to be teenagers, or why them specifically) who are trying to protect the present from a base of New York on 9/11. The theme is the old chestnut of the Nazis winning WW2 and what today would be like under the Nazis. Characters are okay but a little lightweight (the most interesting is their organic computer, which says a lot) and the story felt that way too. If you are in the YA range and this kind of story is new to you, then you will probably get a lot out of this, if you are a jaded synic like me that has read so many books with these kinds of plots, I would suggest there is not much here for you.

This is the first book in the TimeRiders series by Alex Scarrow.
The central characters are three teenagers mysteriously plucked from certain death by a man who calls himself Foster, and he becomes the guardian and teacher for this new TimeRider team. Time travel is now illegal so they are in training to become Time Travel Police and have the job of ensuring that any attempted altering of history is eliminated so that events return to normal and the course of history is not altered. For instance, in this story someone attempts to alter the course of World War 2 and the team is tasked with finding the perpetrators and eliminating them, thus setting history back on its normal course.

The home base for the team is New York City in a 'time bubble' that always repeats Monday and Tuesday, September 10-11, 2001. They monitor the web and city life and learn to detect any abnormal events that may indicate that history has been altered. The three team members are:

Liam O'Connor - sixteen years old, from Ireland.
Foster rescued him from imminent death on the Titanic in April, 1912.

Madelaine Carter - eighteen years old, from Boston.
Foster rescued her from imminent death in a plane crash in 2010.

Saleena Vikram - thirteen years old, from Mumbai, India.
Foster rescued her from imminent death in a fire in the year 2026.

To give you an idea of what their life will be like, I quote what Foster said to Liam before his actual rescue:

"If you come with me, Liam, there is another way. You'll live an invisible life. You'll exist as a phantom, never quite in this world of ours. Never able to make new friends, never able to find love.... You'll learn about things that...well...
