But the season end and the beginning of Season 2 brought all the good work to nothing. In the first season we're led to believe that Rittenhouse is this powerful secret society that has existed since around 1760 and has infiltrated most aspects of politics, law enforcement and commerce around the world. And yet, in Season 2 it is portrayed as a small family affair. The Preston family, to be exact. Where before we had this anonymous chain that lurked at every corner, we suddenly had an organisation being run by Lucy's mother, acidic Emma, and Lucy's great-grandfather. Rittenhouse no longer seemed so all-powerful. And Bernard Cahill only appeared once in Season 2, to cut off Rittenhouse's now rather small head.
Season 2 also became quite soap-opera-esque, thanks to the happy, and not so happy couples, living in the bunker. The love triangle around Wyatt, Lucy and Jessica was terrible, and the outcome not really very surprising. Rufus, who I had quite liked as a character in Season 1 became quite tortuous to watch, especially with his ever-increasing array of facial muscle displays.
It was a disappointment. And the season conclusion, Miracle At Christmas, although it resolved most things, was also quite a disappointment.
In some ways this was similar to 12 Monkeys, but that was far more successful because it never tried to be anything other than fantastical and ludicrous (while at the same time being very serious with it). Timeless promised much in Season 1, but ultimately delivered little.
It was a good watch, but ultimately disappointing.
