Each chapter features profiles of four women, two that are afraid of getting older and two that are not afraid. Their candid expressions reveal a wide range of experiences, from what they wish others understood about them, their solutions and challenges with the passage of years, keys for vibrant energy and healthy emotional balance, secrets for staying mentally sharp, to the difference between normal memory loss and worrisome symptoms. Other sections suggest ways to teach children about women's history, a checklist for evaluating satisfaction with life, and tips for getting over aging fears, improving relationships, and more.
One of the greatest sources of pain for women is the gap in understanding between generations. Readers say this book helps women bridge the gap between mothers and daughters. Women should first read the chapter on their own age group, then the age chapters for family and friends. Women of all ages express a powerful relief to see that others share their feelings, and that they can help each other in their search for positive ways to grow older in a youth-oriented society. The profiles in the eighties chapter are especially touching and inspiring.
My daughter is turning 40 and I got her a book too. I can tell her how young she is from my perspective, but hearing it from others has more impact. It even got us talking about some taboo areas.
I don't think it works the other way, so I have no expectations that they will understand me, but it gives me a better understanding of myself.
Thank you girls who write.
Though one of the authors is a Ph.D., the book is an easy read and not burdened with psychology-speak. The composite profiles ring true and are the result of input from hundreds of women.
A must read for all women!
