For a 47mm stainless steel case, this is a bit on the lighter side and matching it to the all leather strap is as light as a feather compared to other steel on bracelets. It is polished on the sides while offering a brushed look in the bezel. The strap is all genuine calfskin leather but it is missing the high mark; it is a bit stiff out of the box and not soft and supple; however it wears comfortably. The light brown leather strap combines and contrasts very well with the cream white dial; worth noting is that Timex is using a non-Standard 21mm lug to lug which makes it difficult to swap to a bracelet. The dial is protected by a mineral glass crystal. Timex offers 4 variations of this model, black dial with leather (2 colors), black dial with stainless steel bracelet and the pictured cream white dial with light brown leather.
Quick set date feature – It is access by pulling the crown to position two, however it found it a bit tricky to stop at two and kept going to three, it does not offer enough resistance between clicks. Once in position two, you can go up or down very easily to the correct date.
Fourth Hand – The GMT hand is also easily set by activating the top pusher, clicking it once will advance the GMT hand by 30 minute intervals. If you are in need of setting the 4th hand to adjust for non-standard minutes, pulling the crown to the 3rd position will allow much granular adjustment. This should only be needed for places using non-standard minutes.
Rotating Bezel – Unidirectional dive type bezel with 24 hour markings. The bezel only rotates counter clock wise, and will aid displaying the 3rd time zone in combination with the GMT hand. There are 3 clicks to the next hour for a total of 72 positions in full rotation.
Lume – the tip of the hour and minute hand has very good Lume. By looking at any picture you would think that they are Lumed given the same color of the minute and hour hand. It would also raised this time piece just a bit over other models in this price range; and it would make it look much better in the dark. It is always a bit more challenging to accurately tell the time without the minute markers being lumed; however not an issue since this has Indiglo.
Indiglo – The trademark indiglo feature on this piece is nothing short of spectacular. Timex has really master the art of the silhouette with the blue light background. It is not only very good looking but also extremely easy to tell the time in the dark including the GMT hand.
Accuracy – So far this ticker has kept time well after being synchronized with USNO master time for both the 12 hour and GMT times but I’ve only had it for a few days. I will update the review after a few weeks. The alignment of all the hands is precise and point to the right markers.
Summary: This is another well-built watch from Timex. It is not a solid 5 out of 5, but given the price point (sub $100) I would give it a solid 4. There are no other analog GMT watches at that price range. For the looks and styling it gets a 5, for materials used 4.
2 week Update: Surprisingly, this watch is the most accurate of my collection. It has kept sync'd to USNO time to within less than half a second for the last 2 weeks. Was not expecting that from this piece. I am very please with this ticker and just very glad that I got it. It is just beautiful to look.
Correction on the Lume: The hour markers are also lumed, but they need to receive a big charge for them to glow. As in my case, it is very faintly noticeable and do not last a long time. The hour/minute hands glow much stronger and last considerably longer.
I ended up replacing the original leather band with a much better quality leather band with white stitching. The leather band is probably the low mark on the watch overall. After 45 days, the accuracy of this watch has kept really good time.
1 Year Update: I Like this watch so much that is shares the top shelf of my watchbox along with Bulovas, Seikos and Swiss Invictas. Accuracy has remain a top mark. From the last time I sync'd the watch due to DST time change, in 5 months has only gained 3.9 seconds.
The dial is so beautiful and it is one of the highlights of this piece. This is one of Timex Gems and the price does not do it justice; it is definitely worth more than its cost.
Timex and am very pleased.....quality & ease. I did read the many language manual (the English part, thank you) but it was all very easy for my GMT. The manual is as thick as a paperback and overs ALL their watches. You might even find another for your collection. The date and GMT 24-hour time zone was easier than my R*****. Band ??? hahaha,
people who complained about stiff-leather will be glad in several months it is still looking new. No ??? Break-down and visit your jeweler and pay for another band, equal almost to the watch price and it will not last half as long. And the
Indiglo feature beats cheap hands/numbers that don't even glow. This is an amazing watch for this price. The off-white
dial, I think, is also easier to read than the field black face. But each to his own. (Mine was assembled in the Philippines.)
Not a lead brick like my other big face watches. Easy on the eyes. Sturdy leather strap. Timex owns the night; Indiglo rocks.
Not a diving watch. Take it off to shower/swim/dive because it lacks a screw-down crown, and removing the backs of these things to dry them out usually breaks them, which frankly sucks.
Sadly, this watch has odd sized 21mm strap lugs, which means that 99% of the coolest and best matched straps like shark mesh and ploprof designs will not fit.
Good news, Super Engineer Type II and Nato two-piece bands will fit. I highly recommend the black with yellow stripe Nato bands. The Creme/blue Nato band looks fab. Of note, the Super Engineer Type II band makes this piece wear like a $1500 watch.
At $64, this timepiece is a highly wearable, good enuf piece of eye candy. It is supposed to do GMT stuff, but who cares...for this kind of money, it should not have to do parlor tricks.
I repair/restore watches as a hobby, own a couple hundred watches, and recommend this model Timex as a sturdy, accurate, nicely priced timepiece, as long as you keep it reasonably dry.
Go fot it.
