Timex Group B.V. is one of the best-known American watch companies. Timex's U.S. headquarters are located in Middlebury Connecticut and it has substantial operations in China, the Philippines and India and full scale sales companies in Canada, the UK, France and Mexico.

The company began in 1854 as Waterbury Clock in Connecticut's Naugatuck Valley, known during the nineteenth century as the "Switzerland of America." Sister company Waterbury Watch manufactured the first inexpensive mechanical pocket watch in 1880. During World War I, Waterbury began making wristwatches, which had only just become popular, and in 1933 it made history by creating the first Mickey Mouse clock under license from Walt Disney, with Mickey's hands pointing the time.

During World War II, Waterbury renamed itself U.S. Time Company. In 1950 the company introduced a wristwatch called the Timex. Over the next three decades, Timex was sold through a series of advertisements which emphasized its durability by putting the watch through "torture tests," such as falling over the Grand Coulee Dam or being strapped to the propeller of an outboard motor, with the slogan "It takes a licking and keeps on ticking." With the help of former Olympic broadcaster, spokesman John Cameron Swayze, sales took off. The company later became Timex Corporation, then Timex Group and, to date, has sold over one billion watches.

The company has remained very competitive and the Timex brand continues its dominance through present day. Its primary market remains the United States and Canada, although the Timex brand is sold worldwide due to its ability to capitalize on its strong brand image and reputation for quality.

One of the most successful and important features available on many Timex watches is the Indiglo backlight system. Indiglo is a brand name of Indiglo Corporation, solely owned by Timex for licensing purposes. Timex electroluminescent lamps, branded Indiglo, were introduced in 1992 in the Ironman watch line. They were an immediate success. The Indiglo lamp uniformly lights the surface of the Timex’s watch dials in a manner that makes the dial read very easily in many different light settings. In some newer watches the Indiglo backlight only lights up the numbers, rather than the entire LCD display, which is achieved by means of a specialized film that inverts the LCD transmissivity.

Today, Timex Group products are manufactured in the Far East and in Switzerland often based on technology that continues to be developed in the United States and in Germany. With a large and varied line of watches, Timex has the style for everyone. From the locker room to the board room, there is a great Timex style time-piece for you.

My 8-year-old son bought this watch with his own money to wear to school. The most important feature to him is how you can use it as a stopwatch so he and his friends can take turns timing each other in races on the playground. He loved the watch and wore it every day, including to a super-dirty, Lord-of-the-Flies-style day camp. It survived that! He left it behind at the pool. It survived that! But it did NOT survive being at the bottom of my pool bag. No idea why, but suddenly only half of the watch face is just blank. This renders the watch completely useless. We will be using Timex's kids' watch replacement guarantee -- if you save the UPC from the original box, Timex will replace any kids' watch within a year of purchase, no questions asked, for $10.

My kids love these IronKids watches, because they have all the features they like to use, including not only the stop watch, but the countdown timer also, alarm, etc. My daughter loves that the crystal (i.e. glass) is protected from marks and scratches because it is set below the top of the plastic case. Other watches seem to get scratches and marks on the glass easily, but these are more durable, especially important for kids.

Both before and after I initially wrote my review, I searched all over the place online and in brick stores for a good digital watch for children. By good, I of course mean durable, but also one with a stopwatch, countdown timer, alarms, etc. My kids don't want just a plain watch without any functionality. They are kids! They like to time things, use it for sports at school, set alarms, etc. They enjoy the glowing effect and durable construction. Many others point out that the watch has some issues with the band or the size or... But good luck finding other brands of kids watches that offer all that this watch does, or a replacement straps that works well and fits good. If you find something better (all you giving low ratings), by all means please come back here and comment with some details of what's better! I know Amazon limits what detail you can share, but any hint would be nice. Another brand, another website, etc.

So far, so good. I was concerned that it wouldn't hold up on the wrist of a very active child, but we have not had a single issue. Keep the directions! My dear child managed to set an alarm for a very inconvenient time but didn't know how to correct it. :) Love that it lights up. Wrist band is comfortable enough that I haven't heard any complaints.

Bought this for my eight-year-old son and am so glad I did. We both love the alarm features. He uses it to make sure he comes home in time when out playing at a neighborhood friend's house, as well as for any other occasion when he needs to a little reminder about the passage of time. While it seems loaded with features (which I haven't figured out), it took him less time to master the functions than to get used to wearing a watch. This is his third watch. The others, without an alarm feature, were useless to him. I suppose he has been wearing this watch daily since the end of the summer. It is sturdy and can withstand bath time.

Update in April: This watch has been great. As I said above, it withstood bath time. However, one dip in the pool and it was shot. That doesn't constitute water resistant to me. Sure they have a one year warranty, but you have to pay a substantial fraction of the cost of the watch for processing. Plus the language of their return policy is a major deterrent: Timex will not provide any warranty service if your watch shows evidence that it has been tampered with, misused, abused, or altered; for example: moisture damage sufficient to affect the proper function of the watch; damage to the case; or visible cracking of the crystal. Well, yes, the watch was damaged by water moisture sufficient to affect the proper functioning. That's exactly the problem.

First time a Timex has let me down. It's fine for the winter, but we'll be looking for another brand with spring/summer here and every day spent in the water.

Excellent purchase for both a 6 year old and his 8 year old cousin. The boys LOVE them! I had bought them as accessories to the boys' first-ever suits for attending a very dressy family wedding. The first and third graders looked and felt very grown up. Best of all, they really like the timed alarm feature to help them manage when to take periodic breaks from doing their homework or chores or playtime. The younger one needs a little help with buckling the watch, but if any other prospective purchaser is hesitant about sizing for a child's wrist, don't be. The strap fits well, is well-constructed, and comfortable. I got the boys their watches in black to go with everything they wear.

Bought this watch for my 11 year old son. He has had it now for 2 months and loves it. He wears is everyday and it's even been in the shower, by accident, a few times and it's still tickin'. He enjoys the light up feature and he is always timing how long things take. Easy for him to put on and take off. Very pleased with the purchase. It's perfect for him!

My 6-year old loves this watch. He's been obsessed about keeping time since starting Kindergarten and this really helps him "keep track" on his own. I give it 4/5 stars though since the set up and extra features are very difficult to figure out unless you want to take the time to sit down and read through the instructions (which aren't very easy to read)! For our use though (Time keeping & backlight) it works great and seems to be holding up well.
