"Tin Men" by Archie Green offers an interesting look into the lives of those who have created tin men. He paints an excellent picture of how these tin men have become a part of material folk culture. Through his use of interviews and photographs, Green pieces together fascinating histories and uses of these tin men. I found "Tin Men" to be both enlightening and informative.

Swords Into Plowshares, Armour Into Tin Men

Childlike, innocent, unsophisticated art for its own sake, with the inevitable by-product of open display of the quality and workmanship of the piece, and thereby the workman. For he who works with his hands only is a laborer; he who works with his hands and head is a craftsman, and he who works with his hands, head and heart is an artist. What I came away with after reading Tin Men by Archie Green is an appreciation for the artist as the common man, the tinsmith in this case. Prophet Isaiah, peace be upon him, said one day mankind would beat our swords into plowshares and our spears into pruning hooks. If he had gone on a bit further, he might have added that we would beat our armor into tin men, for little children to play around and men and women to enjoy both professionally, functionally and aesthetically. Tin Men is a 'sleeper' that is at first a neat little window into Americana that opens up to reveal a great, broad and deep view.

A Look Into "Laborlore"

Green highlights the artistry of the quirky tin men we see in our town/city in "Tin Men" and how they shouldn't be classified as just pieces of junk. From advertising their shop, displaying the craftmanship of its workers, or made just for fun, Green describes how these tinsmiths have created their own genre of occupational folklore (or "laborlore" as Green deems it) in a very interesting and compelling way. Having the pictures of the mentioned tin men was a nice touch too, as it brought out the charming aspect of learning more about these tin men and their history. I enjoyed reading about how these tin men and their tinsmiths classify as a part of material folk culture.

In this book Archie Green opens readers eyes to a whole new "life" of a tin man. Here, he illustrates beautifully the interesting histories behind Tin Men and their creators. The book is more comfortable of a read than most books read for informational purposes and really attaches the reader to the art/artists. He opened my eyes about common man art or "labor lore" as he reffers to it. I read this for a college course,material folk culture, and found it highly useful. Green describes things in a simple and readable way,however,the information given on what he learned from the artist them self helped me to grasp the concepts of what is "folk" and "folk art" on a higher level.

Archie Green presents a little thought about, but often enjoyed piece of Americana in his book, "Tin Men." Green explores not only the object itself, but also the creators behind them, their uses in society, and the people who love and collect them. The world of metal working is often thought of as untilitarian. "Tin Men" is a look a the whimsical side of tin smithing. Green dicusses the history of metal working. He introduces the builders. He disriptively captures the tin people. A must read if assigned by your folklore instructor.
