Editorial Reviews

Alberto Iglesias's dark and jazzy soundtrack to director Tomas Alfredson's (Let the Right One In) sinister film adaptation of John le Carre s novel.

This remake of the critically acclaimed 1979 TV drama starring Alec Guinness features the cream of British acting talent including Gary Oldman, Colin Firth and Tom Hardy.

Nominated for an Academy Award for his work in the film The Constant Gardener (2005) and again for his work in The Kite Runner (2007), Spanish composer Alberto Iglesias is perhaps best known for his work with director Pedro Almodóvar.

This is a sublime, madly atmospheric soundtrack to one of the best films of 2011. But Julio Iglesias's wonderful La Mer, which accompanies the film's final minutes, is absent. What gives?

Soundtracks often "make" a film. In this case, Alberto Iglesias' work adds a touch just subtle enough to really stand out. From the melancholy of a London street to the breaking of an intelligence man, there's just enough here to do the job, no more, no less.

The recording quality is wonderful, with a nice wide dynamic range, and mastering that lets you really hear the music for all it's worth, even if you're just listening with earbuds.

For those who've complained that the closing piece "Le Mar" as sung by Julio isn't on here, remember this is *Alberto's* score--and then go snag a copy of "En El Olympia", which has the song you're after. You'll probably like them both.

Alberto Iglesias is one of the best composers working today and like Alexandre Desplat he is due for an Oscar real soon. What makes Iglesias so stunning is his ability to adapt to whatever the story requires. His score for The Skin I Live In is an absolute masterpiece and is almost guaranteed to get at least an Oscar nomination. For Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy he crafts a brooding jazzy concoction that reminds me of Ennio Morriocne's old suspense scores. It's quiet, it's focused and it's brilliant. Iglesias hits another out of the park and is constantly reminding us how score should function in a film.

We open with a track titled "George Smiley". The music has a film noire feel and immediately instills Iglesias' trademark style. The score feels like it's from the 70's, it feels like it's from Europe, it feels classic and just has a nostalgic feel. Parts of it remind me of his score to The Dancer Upstairs as the music is similar in tone. There is always an underlaying layer of suspicion. Certain moments feel like character portraits as they subtly evoke small emotions. When tension needs to rise he has no problem getting the music to where it needs to be. Strings begin to pulsate to craft elegant tension if that makes any sense. It's a very unique score to the film, and that makes it difficult to write about. I just feel like every moment of the score holds me close as it whispers a story in my ear. It's a masterful experience.

With a filmography that includes The Kite Runner, The Dancer Upstairs, Che, The Skin I Live In, The Constant Gardener and many more it's an amazement he hasn't won an Oscar yet. This year has proven to be Iglesias' strongest year. His music is becoming more structured and thematic. That in turn translates into big emotions. Tinker Tailor Solider Spy is one of those scores that builds its own identity and quietly instills itself upon the listener. This score is a quiet little masterpiece that needs to be heard.

This espionage thriller has the ring of truth to it, in that it seemed very real indeed. No spectacular Bond heroics, just hard-working cold warriors combatting a ruthless adversary on a daily basis. The score written by Mr. Iglesias gave the motion picture its soul and animus. It is a musical tour de force that evokes a certain mood like a gray, rainy day. Splendid stuff.

This is a very interesting work by Mr. Iglesias. It is very somber and sometimes quiet, yet very well played. This is not the soundtrack, as some of the songs done by other artists is not here. I do recommend this if you enjoy music from movies. But remember, it is not for all.

Loved the movie. LOVE the soundtrack. It's what you want a movie soundtrack to sound like. In this case, not the pop hits you hear in the movie but all the music you hear quietly in the background. Kind of jazzy and just mellow enough to listen to when having dinner or piddling around the house.

Superb and engaging; it is the perfect soundtrack for this excellent film; however, the music goes beyond mere atmosphere, but stands on it own for craftsmanship, color and movement. In addition, it is a remarkable coalescence of "world music," twentieth century compositional technique and jazz into something that transports us to the early 1970s.

A beautifully crafted film. Quite a slow mover but I liked this. Amazing plot, outstanding acting and a pleasure to watch due to the muted hues and beautiful art direction. This movie is pure class. I was very taken by the soundtrack too. Moody and atmospheric - some pieces quite jazzy. I recommend it when driving long distances.
