Deschene founded her popular website, www.tinybuddha.com, to provide a forum where people could share stories anonymously and support each other in today’s fast-paced society. Now, she’s collected 40 blog posts from the site and compiled them into a book centered around the theme of self-love. Deschene provides an introduction to establish her own stake in the struggle for personal acceptance, but throughout she lets the posts speak for themselves with little analysis. The book is organized into chapters focused on a particular barrier to self-love, such as childhood trauma, comparing oneself to others, or lack of self-forgiveness. Deschene has done an excellent job of avoiding repetition, ensuring each individual post is unique and resonant. The book also includes tips and quotes for those looking for smaller guideposts along the path to a more serene inner state. This text would be ideal for anyone struggling with recent life upheaval or just working to let go of things they regret—and in the end, isn’t that all of us? --Amber Peckham

The parts I love about this book are the stories from others (like myself) walking their journey; they share their own experiences and insight which resonates with me. Another part I love is that you don't have to start at the beginning, I jumped to the topic that was most important to me and have read it over and over. I love the topics written in the book because they are specific to real life experiences. At the same time the "Tips" serve as examples on how to apply certain ideology to a situation.
This is the kind of book you carry with you always; pull it out when you have a little time on your hands, or when you made time to specifically read this book! Additionally, it is easy to carry around because it has a hardcover and it's small; it fits nicely in my purse too, I carry a medium size one!
The book was written simply and too the point. I would recommend it to anyone going through the process of learning to love themselves, and to those who would love to have something easily accessible for moments of inspiration and consolation and validation.
Without giving away too much, I struggled with a lot of the issues detailed by Ms. Deschene and the contributing readers, and saw a little bit of myself in every chapter...some more than others, of course. Reading the stories by the contributers put things into more perspective, and it made the issues described more real and relatable, so to speak. The chapters were also very well organized, with an introduction, followed by stories, and then a summary in each one. I came out of it with a better understanding of myself and why I behave and think in certain ways, and while it will take time to heal old wounds, knowing is half the battle.
So many of us grow up learning to do what others want and fulfilling others' needs before our own, and present an image to the world that's vastly different from what we're really feeling, and are afraid to be real, be ourselves. I was one such person. I recommend this book to anyone struggling with any sort of self-doubt, whatsoever. After all, how can we give love to others and learn to accept others when we can't love and accept ourselves?
Very well done and inspirational book, and I look forward to reading the author's other works.
Learning about people's struggles with self-love is eye-opening. I've realized that many people out there have gone through situations as difficult or a lot more difficult than mine. Also, I've learned that we're all advancing on the same path of spiritual growth, but each one of us is doing it at his or her own pace. Personal growth cannot start without self-love, and this book is a great tool to start.
Even then, after reading this book, I'm still glad I didn't because that's where I was. And that's what's great about this book.
Unlike most self help books that are overly structured and rational, this books gives you a zen like simplicity of direct stories from real people to inspire the reader in real life situations.
The authors know that testimonies are inspirational sometimes than scientific analysis, and that is why for me, this book was terrific.
Read it. It's the perfect beginners guide to loving yourself and accepting love from the universe.
