Originally this food was just known as "Hazel Hamster" and it was great! It was one of the very few commercial hamster foods that was actually really good. It was great nutrition-wise, had a decent variety of nuts and seeds, and the price was all right. However, it is now being sold as "Tiny Friends Farm / Hazel Hamster" and has a different formula, which isn't as good as the original. It doesn't look like you can buy the original version anymore which is a problem because this new version isn't great.
Here is the GA for the new TFF formula:
And this is what a hamster needs:
Protein: 17% - 22%
Fat: 4% - 7%
Fiber: 8% - 15%
So as you can see, the protein is too low but fat/fiber are still good but on the lowish side. I wouldn't recommend making this the only food you feed your hamster. You'll have to mix something in make up for the low protein. However, since fat/fiber are already somewhat low, it's difficult to figure out exactly what to add.
I just switched my hamster from the old HH food to a mix of Higgin's Sunburst and Mazuri Rat/Mouse food instead. Higgin's is very low in protein, and high in fat, and decent in fiber while Mazuri is very high in protein, and high in fat, and low in fiber. When you blend the two together as a 60% Higgins and 40% Mazuri blend, you wind up with a mix that's decent in protein, high in fat, and slightly low in fiber. If you feed your hamster some green veggies too, you'll make up for the fiber. My hamster seems to really enjoy it and it's easy and cheap to make so I like it a lot too.
My review for the original formula was 5 stars. My review for this new TFF formula is just 3 stars. I took off one star because the nutrition isn't great. It's too low in protein and its fiber/fat content makes it too difficult to mix with another food to make it viable. I took off an additional star because I feel like they're abusing the "Hazel Hamster" name. For some reason, Tiny Friends Farm shows up as Hazel Hamster on Amazon, Petco, and Petsmart. I even went to Petco, specifically asked if they still had any Hazel Hamster left, and they gave me a bag of TFF. They said were the exact same thing, both in terms of quality/ingredients AND listed as the same product in their inventory. This feels so wrong to me.
Overall great food!
