Betsy is an interesting person, no question about it. Having had the opportunity to co-create one of the most intriguing spiritual films of the recent past, she became a walking embodiment (or at least a living litmus test) of the spiritual philosophies she and the film's subjects espoused. But, as with all spiritual philosophy, there is a separation between the purity of the philosophy and the messiness of our daily lives. And the idea of perfection is, in Itself, flawed. Nobody can possibly live up to the expectations of being the change that we wish to see in the world, simply because we all have to carry our baggage with us on this journey. And, the difference between the image of ourselves we like to hold and the one that really exists often is huge if we aren't diligent about being brutally honest with ourselves. With the innate wisdom of someone who has seen both sides of the spiritual coin and lived to tell about it, Betsy gets brutally honest about her life, the lofty philosophies of "Bleep" seen through the wisdom of life experience, and how it all has made her a more honest person in the deepest sense.
I applaud Betsy's truth and openness in this memoir, and think it is a good and honest follow-up to the idealistic (albeit fascinating) views presented in "Bleep". While "Bleep" told you you could manifest your dreams and that you create your reality, Betsy shares her journey in the difficulties and challenges that come along with that belief... The simple truth that creating your reality may in fact be possible, but it's a lot harder than just visualization and wishful thinking, and it is a moving target, as well. These truths, while decidedly not as sexy or as easy as the scientists and seekers of "Bleep" might have explained in a few hours of interviews, are much more valid and valuable to me. They align with my own experience. They fit the reality that I actually live in - not the reality that I can supposedly create (which, as much as I might have wished or visualized, didn't happen after enmeshing myself in the ideas and science of "Bleep"). That Betsy herself struggled with what "Bleep" promised vs. what her life experience eventually manifested is actually good medicine for those of us left feeling empty and frustrated by the lack of spiritual and material satisfaction promised, whether implicitly or explicitly, by films and books such as "Bleep" and "The Secret". Not so much in an "I told you so" kind of way, but more in a validation that reality, as soft and pliable as the underbelly may be, is extremely hard to manipulate on ANY level for us mere mortals. If one or more of the film's creators is willing to admit and share that with everyone through the wisdom of personal failures and experiences, it makes me feel like maybe I wasn't doing it wrong after all... That maybe there is more to be learned and more to be explained than the beautiful but ultimately incomplete ideas behind the "I create my reality" philosophy promises. In other words, as we all know if we care to admit it to ourselves, there is no free lunch - and no free Mercedes just waiting for us to plink out of the waiting Genie of the universe. In truth, we all have to change our reality the hard way... With honesty, hard work, honest introspection, AND a clear vision of what we really want... Not just what our ego wants.
Betsy Chasse has been on both sides of that philosophy now, from eager propagandist to being brutally honest about her journey and the real truths that come with that. She has walked the Yellow Brick Road and met the wizard promised in "Bleep"... and saw behind the curtain. Her journey out of Oz and into her authentic self is an ultimately beautiful expression and manifestation of truth... the kind of truth that doesn't require vision boards, gurus, hours of silly meditation, or promises of manifesting your heart's desire. It is right in our own backyard, and it feels really, really right.
