The only really important question to be answered about a self-help book such as this is whether it helps.

Emphatically, yes in this case.

I heard a very brief interview with the author on the BBC - ironically while lying awake in the middle of the night. I scribbled down the best phonetic approximation of her name I could manage and through the miracle of the internet tracked down and bought this book the next morning.

Even more ironically, one of the first bits of advice I read in the book was not to listen to anything engaging or potentially upsetting - like BBC news radio - while trying to get to sleep. When you think about it - duh, of course.

I'm only about a third of the way through the book - it's a very detailed read condensing a great deal of professional expertise and I want to read it carefully. But by following the advice I've read - and there's a lot more to come - I've already gone from fairly terrible sleep to ok sleep. I may not be bursting with energy yet, but I'm no longer dragging myself through the day like a zombie either.

One of the things I'd never really considered before hearing the author on the BBC is that hours of sleep are not always the most important measure - the issue of how well you sleep is often as critical or more critical than how long you sleep.

As I said, I'm only partway through the book, but even in the unlikely event that the rest of the book is completely useless, I've already gotten far more than my money's worth out of this book. Ms. Ramlakhan truly knows what she's talking about.

Update: The overall thrust of this book involves changing habits which sabotage good sleep. It's not an instant solution because changing habits takes time.

I say surprisingly helpful because I've researched insomnia a lot and nothing has really helped. This book is easy reading and the author has a personable way of getting the message across, with summaries at the end of each section. I really liked how it didn't rehash all the info you can find online...stuff about sleep hygiene etc. etc. The author discusses this of course, but goes a step further by stating you have to be comfortable with your sleep environment...eg, online you will read how the bedroom should be pitch black for optimal sleep whereas the author states have some kind of low light if that's what makes you feel comfortable and safe. There are other tips you wouldn't ordinarily think of...I loved the 'beach' slow, deep breathing method. Tried it and it works, it quietened down my 'monkey mind'. It was also a revelation how being chronically tired makes you not want to do anything energetic during the day, you 'over rest' which only adds to the insomnia problem. You need to 'earn' your sleep by moving and spending energy. It's not an overnight fix...habits take around 21 days to become ingrained. If you want to put in the effort, you will be rewarded with better sleep.
