-Graphics: 6/10 Suitable, but nothing revolutionary. Gave it a point lower d/t just blandness.
-Maps: 4/10 IMHO pretty bad. Probably a step up from the worst MW maps. Definitely forgettable.
-Customization: 5/10 Some perks like options and a little variation. Though nothing spectacular. Burn cards which are kinda like death perks for MW.
-Gameplay: 6/10 The supposedly revolutionary part. First off there is only 6v6 max which may seem low (and it is). But they have filler bots to fight, which are somewhat like creeps in a League of Legends (points to get a titan). Otherwise they seem to just be filler, though they can harass titans a bit.
FPS combat is FAST... In fact its a bit too fast IMHO. If you are a hardcore FPS junkie who can jumpsnipe across maps without issue it still might seem a bit chaotic in PvP fights (I say PvP fights because its not nonstop PvP). At times even the best seem to be randomly shooting and jumping. Though the parkour mechanic is excellent for movement. It just would have been nice if everything was slowed a hair for enjoyment factor.
Mech combat it probably the most disappointing. There really is not significant difference aside from speed+movement to being in a mech (titan). And honestly gameplay wise as you get better you realize being in a titan can be more of a hinderance than a plus. Often times it seems like everyone/anyone/everywhere/anywhere can shoot/attach/distort/punch or just in general F with you majorly while in titan mode. It becomes better to use in guard or follow mode as a distraction at times. Sadly this is one of the aspects that turned me off the most about the game.
Overall Titanfall was not for me and did not live up to the hype. As games comparison it seems the most similar to the MW type games in terms of speed and gameplay. If you do enjoy those you may well enjoy Titanfall. I steer more towards the Battlefield and MWO type gameplay and I truly, as much as it pains me (and my wallet) dislike Titanfall. If you are interested in the more tactical paced FPS genre I seriously suggest avoiding at least until its down to a more affordable range such as high 20's low 30's.
Pros:
- Fast, frantic, furious first person combat.
- Core gameplay is enjoyable in spite of any issues I find.
- Respawn nailed movement in this game. The Pilots feel fast, agile, and lethal. The Titans feel mechanical, heavy, and dangerous.
- The maps are not particularly mind blowing, but they suit the game well and are a blast to traverse on foot or in a giant robot.
- They have the bare essential gametypes
- Giant robots with giant guns... also jet packs.
Cons:
- Poor implementation of a rather generic set of weapons. Mind you they all feel good in-game, but the speed and balance of the game makes some guns useless and some guns overpowered.
- There is very little incentive to ever play as a team in Titanfall. It happens, but it doesn't feel essential.
- The AI controlled enemies and friendlies are insignificant cannon fodder.
- The color pallet and visuals are uninspired and very last gen. grey/brown/grey/brown/glowy blue/grey/brown
- No destructible/interactive environments, besides running up the wall. All this awesome hardware and you can't even knock down a cardboard box.
- The Campaign is a complete joke. It is literally the multiplayer, but with mediocre cut scenes and comically contrived voice acting.
- I and everyone I know who plays has had some technical issues with Titanfall on PC. The occasional crash and signs of poor optimization are there. Certainly not the worst I've ever seen, consider it playable.
Respawn has two directions they can head in with Titanfall. Either focus on the MP and go for a lower price point OR hike up your knickers and do what few triple A studios can do, offer a robust MP and a stellar story experience for 1-4 players. I say they focus on MP and you get this game when it's $40 or less.
However, it doesn't actually do anything revolutionary, and it doesn't go above and beyond anything that you should have expected from the next high-budget twitch shooter. Add in the fact that Electronic Arts is the publisher, and you should be wary of getting your hopes up too far.
There are TONS of highlight reel style moments to be had, however there is no real versatility in the game modes, and there is no single player experience at all. The game seriously lacks on content, but the gameplay itself is really superb.
There is this thing called "multiplayer campaign" that is truly terrible. Basically, the game just forces you to play against the same opposing team over and over again with a little bit of background dialogue that you probably won't notice or understand. It wouldn't be that big of a deal, however the game forces you to play the multiplayer campaign if you want to unlock the other titans. Bad move forcing people to play such an under-developed mode.
As with any EA game, be ready for a lot of frustration from the support of the game. I played 6 hours straight and then lost all of my in-game progress because a server crashed, and EA didn't care at all.
Basically, this is the same thing as any other call of duty game; play enough games so you can level up and buy better guns, and then just keep playing the same modes over and over again, for whatever reason COD fans do that. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone other than those people who buy Call of Duty every year as soon as it comes out.
