Titanic Style: Dress and Fashion on the Voyage Hardcover – November 13, 2012
by
Grace Evans
(Author)
Titanic Style explores the world of fashion and dress at the time of RMS Titanic’s famous voyage. With stunning images and enlightening historical analysis, this book takes us through the wardrobes of passengers and crew of all classes and ages, from the most intimate undergarments to the warm overcoats needed on that last fearful, cold night.
The ship was a microcosm of post-Edwardian society, in which everyone belonged to a particular class and dressed accordingly. The luxurious attire of the ladies in first class, the cream of European and American society, was changed several times a day, while the more sober and conservative clothes of the men of all ranks subtly conveyed their status, and children were dressed to enhance their social standing.
We also visit the families below deck, dressed in second-hand or homemade clothes, heading for a new life in a country free of repressive class distinction. Stories and records of individual passengers and crew members are woven into the narrative to give an engaging account of what life was really like onboard the world’s most famous ocean liner.
Whether you are a Titanic enthusiast, a fashion lover, or both, this book will delight you with exquisite garments and the absorbing cultural history behind them.

Each new book I receive about Titanic always offers new information; just as this one does. Looking foward to new information about Titanic.

Most interesting and entertaining. It brings an immediacy to a cosmic event.

Some interesting stories about the Titanic passengers, such as how a fashionably attired apprentice dressmaker was mistaken for a first class passenger upon rescue and provided a cabin on the Carpathia before being booted out when her steerage status was discovered! But I was too disappointed in the selection of illustrations to give more stars. I was surprised there weren't photos of actual passengers, besides Lucile, to display their attire and that 10 and 20 year old gowns were prominently featured.

If you costume, this is a good reference for the 1915 fashions. If you're looking for a Downton Abbey fashion, this would be a good reference. A bit short on detail, but a good starting point.

I had hoped this book would have way more pictures of the female passengers than it did. I'm a costumer of sorts and bought it for reference purposes. It did turn out to be a fairly interesting book overall, but definitely a disappointment for my purposes. I sure wish there had been a "see inside" thing on this one- I"d have saved my money.....ah well, such is life
