Titans are in Town consists of a novella and cultural essays by Dr. Tomislav Sunic. In the novella and his essays, Sunic discusses the state of Europeans in their postmodern wasteland. Confronted by endless interracial chaos, Europe longs for the return of Titans. Based on Friedrich Georg Jünger’s seminal 1944 work Die Titanen, the dormant Titans represent the only salvation for slumbering Europeans. The Titans’ unexpected return from mid-earth will start a resumption of Europe’s greatness.

Sunic’s protagonist Held in his novella struggles to maintain his dignity amidst a dystopian landscape in which consumerism, alien migrants and a never-ending struggle against nobility of character are unceasing. Confronted by decay all around him, he fervently hopes for the return of Europe’s Titans as foretold by the ancient Greeks. They will augur an age in which Indo-European values are restored and degeneracy forever extinguished. These final days will reassert European mythos as superior to Judeo-Christian values. Held is an Everyman for the Current Year and his struggles are reflected in the experiences of today’s Europeans.

Dr. Sunic also includes essays concerning the current degradation present within contemporary education. Intended for curious students, he discusses such topics as literature and politics along with tragedy and mythos in ancient Europe and the modern West. Titans are in Town also offers a guide on what to read in order to better understand Europe’s ancient patrimony of myths and lore. Excavating through the rubble of high culture, Dr. Sunic capably depicts pathways towards real learning for young Europeans.

About the Author

Dr. Tomislav Sunic was born in Zagreb, Croatia in 1953. He holds a doctorate in Political Science from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Dr. Sunic gives lectures around the world and has authored several other books, including Homo Americanus: Child of the Postmodern Age (2007) and Against Democracy and Equality: The European New Right (2011), which deal with themes articulated in Titans are in Town. He lives in Zagreb.

The essays are good.

I recommend the book for its essays. The novella, on the other hand, falls short of my expectations. The use of the terms Saturns and Titans for two warring camps is confusing, since the Saturn/Cronus of mythology is a Titan. It is difficult to tell where the story takes place. On page 44, I think it says that Sarajevo is 1000 miles south of where they are now. This would put them in the vicinity of Stockholm, Sweden or perhaps Saint Petersburg, Russia. Elsewhere, however, it looks like they are in the former Yugoslavia, since it talks about Tito. There are many other examples of murky semantics in the novella, which is ironic given that Sunic is a linguist.

I’ve been a fan of Sunic for years now. Him and Benoist are my personal favorite thinkers alive today. But they are not for beginners.

Titans Are In Town, as its subtitle says, is a novella with accompanying essays. I’d recommend reading the essays first, especially Balkanization of the System, which I think is Sunic’s best essay to date, and perfectly sums up Sunic’s philosophy overall. The essays in general are very informative and helpful in understanding the points Sunic makes throughout the novella.

The novella is perhaps the best part for me personally, though I’ve heard others prefer the essays. And I’ll admit, I think the novella would have benefitted more as a full-length novel, as sometimes it feels everything happens too quickly. It is also full of nice little tributes to Céline, Cioran, Dominique Venner, and many others. The style reminds one of Jünger, but with a much darker tone; as if Céline wrote Eumeswil while studying Ancient Greek epics interpreted by Nietzsche and Evola. The novella is certainly better when one already has a decent knowledge of German philosophy and Greek mythology. Again, the essays certainly clarify many things about the novella some may find confusing. But still, Sunic isn’t for beginners, and if you already know a little about the various thinkers I’ve mentioned in this review, I’m sure you’ll be fine.

Sunic certainly has proven himself to have a talent for fiction-writing. I hope that he may even pursue it further some time in the future.

To sum up, I liked this book, and I appreciated the wealth of knowledge Sunic expressed in the novella and essays which helped me understand precisely what he was trying to get at.
