This book is only good for a general idea of Titian's work. The reproductions are small and there are no close-ups. But I didn't send it back because it was not worth the trouble. It's a history book, not good for art viewing.

Any review of this book would have to start out by pointing out that it is part of Taschen’s Basic Art series. These books are only 96 pages in length (about half of which consist of the covered artist’s paintings). As such they cannot provide a deep and profound academic tome on the subject. This is especially the case with respect to artists, such as Titian, who have produced in the hundreds of paintings. These books are more successful at covering those artists who have fewer works, such as Bruegel the Elder or Hieronymus Bosch who about 30 or so paintings have been attributed to. Hence the real question is how well does this book cover its topic considering the limitations of its format? The answer very well, especially for the beginner.

The author, Ian Kennedy (Professor of Art History) does a very good job at discussing Titian’s major works and more than shows how soothing his works were. Plus the illustrations themselves are quite impressive, especially for a book in this price range. Actually the illustrations far surpass anything in this price range. They even give more expensive books a run for their money.

However, the book does have some weaknesses. One is that there is nothing new in them in terms of perspective or analysis. Then again, this should not be a problem for the novice reader of the subject. Another problem is that the author does not discuss or integrate the author’s biography with his paintings. A third problem is that there is no analysis or discuss of Titian’s unique style. This is unlike Taschen books on, say Watteau or Vermeer. Those on Watteau analyze his style of painting quickly and using very thick brushstrokes and on Vermeer these is a decent analysis on his use of the camera obscura. No such analysis in this book on Titian.

The author of this paper focused on "art theory" which is one part of Titian's life. I would like to read more about his actual life and interactions with events and people of his time.. The reproductions are good, but seem to be lacking something - clarity?
Only the men are portrayed in clothing. Almost all of the women are undressed. And not all of the women are goddesses or saints or mythical creatures - some of them are living in Titian's world in everyday situations. And it appears to be a "man's" world.
