Still Trying to Digest It

When I first listened to a few songs on the album in the midst of my everyday, fast paced life, I'll admit, it didn't speak to me and I didn't think it was that good. I consider myself a deep, intelligent person, but for some reason I couldn't really understand what message Kendrick wanted to convey. So I stopped everything ...

I turned off my TV and listened to the album from beginning to end while in silence. Now, I think 50 years from now this album will be memorialized in history books.

Kendrick takes us through what it is like to be a black person/black man in America, reaching back from slavery, from the perspective of a wealthy man to one who is poor and has nothing. He addresses Trayvon Martin and the word negus. He suffers through hate and depression and basks in love. He criticizes police violence on black youth but still tells us that we have to confront black on black violence too. He guides us with Nelson Mandela's example and has a poignant dialogue with Tupac, and at the end reminds us that we're the ones we've been waiting for. All in less than 80 minutes. And I know there's more as I'm still trying to digest it.

What a masterpiece.

My favorite hip hop album of the decade so far.

Wow, where to start...Kendrick is not only a musical and poetic genius, I dare say that he is the most important musical spokesperson of this generation. His albums leading up to TPAB are fantastic, being both artistically sound and enjoyable records in their own right and high-water marks for hip hop today, but the overarching message of this record is what sets it apart from the rest in my opinion. Racism is still, unfortunately, alive and well in America today, and this record acknowledges that, but it does so without pointing fingers at one person or group of people specifically; a lot of us are at fault in one way or another, and Kendrick realizes that. He raps about recognizing the bigger pictures of race, self-love, self-hate, fame, success, loss, and finding the good in oneself to try to make the world a better place on these songs, and I love that about this record.

As far as the music and the rapping are concerned, both are absolutely top-quality here. The instrumentals are gorgeous blends of jazz, funk, soul, retro "boom-bap" beats, and electronica. Kendrick was able to recruit some of the best musical artists of the modern era to contribute their talents; Dr. Dre and Flying Lotus contribute production, Snoop Dogg and Rapsody lay down some great verses, Thundercat rocks the base, George Clinton and Bilal croon soulfully, and the Isley Brothers play the instrumental from their song "That Lady" on a live version of one of the songs, and those are just the ones I can remember. The rapping is nothing short of poetry - I've already written about the message(s) on the album, but the way Kendrick conveys his thoughts are creatively well-written and convey his points perfectly; he really does prove his talent as a true poet, I was not speaking in hyperbole.

I could go on further about this album, but I think I'll wrap it up here. To Pimp A Butterfly is, simply put, one of the most important albums (of any genre) of this decade, bar none. If you remotely enjoy hip hop and you still haven't heard this album I implore you, give it a listen and see for yourself if it means as much to you as it does to me and so many other people.

This is one of my favorite albums. Holy crap. If you're into art and deep valid social commentary and rap: just buy this album. Technical lyricism, musical creativity, substance, depth that makes you think and promotes a high replay value. Everything you could possibly want in an album. It really does stand as an album with themes running through it and even growth/evolution/movement from start to end.

The following point could act as a positive or a negative. This album isn't really something fun to bump or just mindlessly listen to. Ive had this on before and had to drop everything I'm doing to lose myself in the ideas expressed in it. For me at least listening to 'To Pimp A Butterfly' is more of an exercise in intellect than it is an opportunity to rock out. Im getting way to pretentious so ill just stop here...

Mark my words, this will be considered a milestone in hip-hop for decades to come.

According to Amazon, five stars means you love it. I don't know if love is the right word because this album is challenging, disturbing, angry, euphoric, and so on. It certainly makes the case that the album as an art form is alive and well. These aren't dance party songs meant to be streamed and forgotten (although some of the songs might come across that way if you don't listen to the lyrics. The best put down of the misogynist, partying, violence glorifying hip hop that gets played on mainstream radio is to put out an album that doesn't say one negative word about that style of "music". It just leads by showing a better way.
The eight minute spoken word outro might be too self indulgent for more than one listen but this is an otherwise compelling and highly listenable body of work that's a window into the feeling of being disenfranchised that is regrettably so prevalent among young black Americans today.

Kendrick and Thundercat Realized their Vision

Listening to this album really makes me appreciate just how approachable Good Kid, M.a.a.d. City was as an album. TPAB is infinitely more political, and not intended as background music. These tracks make you want to think about the lyrics and the state of society.

Instrumentation and guest vocals are superb. The fact that Bilal guests on multiple songs is terrific. I feel that the key to the instrumentation here is Thundercat, who is a virtuoso Bassist (he plays a 6 string Bass!) with an undeniable ability to capture "the funk". Kendrick is incredible and as lyrically sharp & deep as always.

Sound quality and mastering is exactly what one should expect from an album that features the Aftermath logo. This album is a necessary part of any modern hip-hop collection. Long live the real MC's!
