We were sitting on the couch watching their favorite cartoons, I do not tell my children how to spend our time, I let them dictate that to me. As usual one of them did. Rowan asked if we could read stories, Carmen second the request. As she always does when her big sister speaks. I relished the idea, cause it was the thirtenth time I had seen this particular episode of "Caliou."
"What would you like to read?" I asked.
"Frgs, frgs," my little one replied.
I had no idea what she was saying, so I asked her again and she responded.
"Frgs, frgs," Carmen repeated.
"Oh I know what she wants, Rowan exclaimed, Its that toad book you brought home yesterday."
"Yeah Toads," Carmen said with a huge smile.
"I don't want that one Daddy," Rowan said with a frown.
"Plis, plis," Carmen begged.
"Ok, but then princesses," Rowan complied.
"Your an angel Rowan, do you know where the book is?" She never ceases to amaze me.
"Yes Daddy, I'll go get it," Rowan said proudly.
"Thank you sweetheart," I replied.
"Yeah Thunk u," Carmen said with delight.
And off Rowan went to get the book.Carmen and I eager for her return to begin the book a dear friend of mine had given me for my girls the day before. What made it even more special was that he had written it and his whole company helped him as a labor of love complete it. As far as I had known this was his first try at a childrens story, so I wasn't sure what to expect , although I had a suspicion it would be good. Based on my prior experience with his projects of all sorts. How good, now that was something I wasn't expecting. Rowan returned with the "Toad Catcher's Creek" book in hand and jumped up on the coach with her sister and me. From the moment I opened the pages their eyes and ears were glued to the pages. I read it with nearly as much enthusiasm as they had listening to the story. Now I don't want to give away this age old tale with a beautiful twist, however I will say at the end of the book, both my girls hugged me and lept off the coach, each acting out their own rendition of this magical book.
Rowan even exclaimed, "Um Daddy, I don't really believe in magic, I mean unless it comes from inside me."
Carmen added, "Yeah inside, Daddy.
Neddless to say I was holding back tears, as I'm sure all you out there of all ages will if you treat yourself to "Toad Catcher's Creek."
I will say one thing about the content of the story, it goes hand in hand with what I belive my teachings are all about. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a copy today.
The lessons of this short story are invaluable and should make their way to all young people. As our the world around us grows ever more complex and attention spans are tested at every turn, a story such as this, with simple, universal truths -can add to strengthening a child's self image and confidence.
I strongly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a brightly illustrated fun to read children's book that is not only entertaining, but educational and empowering as well.
Told in buoyant verse, this story is an entertaining introduction to the idea that achieving begins with believing.
The father/son relationship is a special element of this story and is celebrated in the author's dedication: "[To my father] for the many loving lessons he spent his time teaching me."
Martin Cannon's vivid illustrations create a captivating setting for this delightful story.
Truly a quality production destined to be a modern classic.
