A value buy and a fun read. Go for it and enjoy.
I read a lot of pulp fiction, especially since the advent of ebooks, and find the new indie wave has some gems imbedded in it as well as the expected dross. This is one of those stories that I remember fondly, rather than seeing the cover on my list and trying to recollect if I have already read it or not.
I like the title, but the title does not describe the book unless you have read it, so read the blurb.
There is thought and humour and good will in this book, as well as good old exciting adventure. It is a book that deserves to be promoted beyond the pulp and into the company of the old sci fi classic successes that came out of the pulp magazines of the fifties and sixties.
Unlike the wave of Star Force style series, some of which I enjoy, but dare I say it, are really men's reading, THE TOAD KING I think would be appealing to both genders, as well as folk who are not really into fantasy or Sci Fi. Beyond its genre, it is something a little different, and a fun story.
and it rang more true to life. The suspense was well placed.
My suggestions are as follows: tighten the writing and get rid of the typos. Have an editor (or several people you know who are
good writers) scan through it, strengthen the writing by removing the errors. It's more like a polish, but in order for this story to
make a bigger impact, it needs another rewrite.
Other than those things, I really enjoyed the story.
As a......tenured aficionado of science fiction (nerd before nerdism was cool) I found this novel to deliver what the core of a good science fiction book should be. This is an interesting and captive story that allows you to immerse yourself into, escaping out of this world and into another. This does not preach or try to mandate what you should believe, it does not push a political or "Freud like theories", but rather entertains with interesting characters that develop and mature drawing you in.
The one push back I must make. It did deliver well on story but I would have preferred a grittier, be it darker, nastier tale (this could be a personal flaw brought about by the times we now live in). However, lack of this makes for handing down to your young teen great, allowing for Xbox/PS3 hiatus and some brain food.
For some deserved work down time to recalibrate and enjoy.....life, escaping into a mind vacation, pick-up The Toad King: A Soldier's Story...........because, "War is Hell".

I very much enjoy exactly this type of tale...an average man, a common soldier, taken by advanced aliens and asked to do the impossible.Read more
