BUT, after trying it out for the first time steaming some fresh broccoli and frozen shrimp and they came out PERFECT!! I love the stainless steel lid and trays and the capacity is AMAZING!! The bowls are all very large (all the same size) PLUS I love having the option of three tiers because I use my steamer ALOT and prefer to steam my leftovers as well. They are a bit different than the norm due to the stainless steel trays slide underneath each open bowl so trying to use as a colander is pretty challenging. The last programmable digital steamer I purchased was a Hamilton Beach about 4-5 years ago and is still working great. I wasn't even in the market to buy a new one except that 'cosmetically' this one caught my eye. I will continue to use my new Toastess TVS682 and update my review if something significant should change. I am giving this four stars because compared to the menu buttons on my Hamiton Beach steamer, the menu buttons on the Toastess could be a little more user friendly. Otherwise, this is a good buy and of good quality.
In season, I have corn on the cob just about every day and this puppy couldn't make it easier. Fill it with water, set the timer for 15 minutes, press 'go' and walk away. 15 minutes later you have perfect corn on the cob. And if you do more than one ear, the others will stay nice and warm while you enjoy the first.
Since I use it almost daily, I don't pour out the water each day. Just leave it and top it up daily. I clean it out about once a week.
I have used mine maybe 20-30 times so far for corn and couldn't be more pleased.
But the thing I didn't like was how much water it uses. It lets too much steam escape, and takes a little longer to cook. If using tap water, this isn't a problem, but you'll have a ton of mineral deposit on the heater and water reservoir.
I used distilled water and it takes way too much, and sometimes I have to refill it before my food is cooked, so I quit using it. Also the parts don't really hold together well - they just set on top of each other without much stability, can easily be knocked apart by touching it the wrong way.
