I very seldom say "wow", or lose my breath due to something I have read. In this instance, it fits. Do you remember reading Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books featuring Sherlock Holmes? If you are a mystery afficianado, you will have read them, probably many times. Doyle could write and so can Clay Boutwell!
This story is one of two in this book; the other one is completely different, and, shorter. I will return to it in short order. The first, and longer story, titled the same as the book, deals with murder, forgery, some nasty characters, and a group of men with an agenda of their own. The second story, "The Handkerchief", is about just that, a handkerchief, a dropped handkerchief. Seeing the prelude to the losing of said article has a profound effect on a waiting watcher at the train station. These two stories are as different in content as chalk and cheese, with one exception, i.e., they both evoke an emotional response in the reader.
Both stories are tightly written, read smoothly, are error free, and a joy to read for a lover-of-language such as myself. Grammatically, they shine! Boutwell transports the reader to an earlier time with his deft writing skills. I could see the meeting room, the stairs rising to the second floor, the brittle balcony across the street, and the countenances of the men involved. I felt the dimness and tremors of trains moving through the station. I saw the handkerchief drop. The speech of the men was apropos for the time period, attitudes given without an avalanch of words, and the stories unfurled as I read. I tell you, Boutwell can write!
Do you like a good mystery without blood and gore? Do you like to cogitate about the motive and means of a killer? Do like a challenge of weaving through red herrings? You will like the first story! Read the second to broaden your view of how little things take on meanings by themselves. Read this book! It is worth far more than the asking price; you will meet a new author that will earn your respect. He certainly got my attention with just two stories. And yes, this book containing those stories were my first introduction to Clay Boutwell. I was so pleased to meet him. By now, you know I wholeheartedly recommend reading this book!
10/24/1859, Boston, MA. The Agora society meets on a regular scheduled basis.
Some of the 12 members are: Joseph (bastard child, Charles’ 1/2 brother), Carl (narrator, Near Eastern languages), Dr. Christopher Harding (expert in papyrus, cuneiform, antiquity writing methods), Mr. Thomas Phillips (ancient weaponry skills, expert marksman), Mr. Charles Tock (speaks 13 languages, read 5 more, biblical language scholar).
The group also established a Freeman’s society which got 136 negroes released from their binds.
The financing of the repairs to the dam in Clarkesville was also a top priority.
Captain Barnwell informed the group Joseph was dead.
Why did Thomas suddenly disappear?
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written Mystery (short story) book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great Mystery movie, or better yet a mini TV series. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this short listen! I wish it had been longer. It reminded me of a Sherlock Holmes story. The style of writing, the subtle clues put together, the hidden relationships brought to light throughout the story, all reminded me of Holmes.
An ancient scroll is discovered and brought to the Agora Society to determine its authenticity. The members soon designate it a forgery. Then more scrolls start to appear. The Agora Society is so disturbed by these forgeries, they take out an ad to warn people about them. Shortly after, one of their members is found murdered, the clues start adding up. The only problem is, they need to find the murderer before two tocks before midnight.
The narration by Wayne Farrell was fantastic. His accent and delivery was absolutely perfect for the material and probably a large part of why I found it such a fun listen. I will look for other books narrated by Farrell.
I received this audiobook for free through Audiobook Boom! in exchange for an honest review.
