I read this author's first novel, which this was the prequel to, first, and fell in love with Nate. These characters are so real, and the story so sweet and intimate and absolutely honest, I was completely drawn in. I was haunted at the end by that too-good-to-be-true, waiting-for-the-other-shoe-to-drop anxiety that plagues anyone with any experience with dysfunctional family life toward the end of that novel, and when that shoe dropped, I was devastated. I couldn't make myself buy the second novel, because I read the description, and I simply couldn't take it. This is a REALLY good writer, to pull up this level of attachment to these characters. I had to go back and read the prequel, just to get a little more of this wonderful character, but I think the ending of that second one was a mistake. No wonder she had to go back and write a prequel for those of us who couldn't get enough of Nate. Maybe when my ardor for Nate cools, I can go on to that next novel and let him go, but this is why I say she is almost TOO good of a writer! This novel series is not for someone who is already dealing with grief in their own life. It's too much to handle, to mourn for an imaginary character on top of it.
I rarely give 5 stars, but this writer is definitely worthy of it, no matter my objections to the story.
Wow! I can't believe how happy this book has made me, especially since I've been so sad with all that happened on book 1 and 2. I had a smile on my face while I was reading this, but I guess that's what Nate does! :):):):):) I was dying to read this. This was going to bring Nate back. So, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! Because it totally did. <3
This book describes how Emi and Nate met and how they became friends. They were both going through some difficult situations, but somehow, they found each other. Nate was what Emi needed, and Emi was what Nate needed. I loved how comfortable they were with each other, even from the first time they met. It was easy for them, they could relate, they found truth and love in each other. I just LOVED it.
Nate, oh Nate. How I've missed you. It's not fair this book is so short. But then again, I would read a single page just to have Nate back. Here you see how he meets Emi, how he starts to like her and how he falls in love with her. Just in a matter of days, but it doesn't really matter, because what he feels for Emi is completely true and different. She inspires him. She makes him a better person. And he makes her a better person too.
"For the first time in my life, I understand what people mean when they talk about artists having their muses. Maybe she's mine."
So, after reading all the books and some posts on Lori Otto's page, I understand that maybe, in the story, Nate wasn't Emi's "soulmate". But, I have a hard time accepting it, so... to me he'll always be her soulmate. And she'll always be his :). And that's that.
"Not today, but someday, I will fight for her. I know what I have to do. When she's ready for love, I'll fight for her."
I'm sure I'll read this particular book and Lost & Found again in the future. I loved them that much.
Emi moves to town after her father cheats on her mother. Which she witnessed first hand. Poor Emi shouldn't have to deal with these very grown up problems. She is forced to move, start a new school, and start over. This all because of her fathers infidelity after twenty some years of marriage. Then we meet Nate. He is sort of lost. His girlfriend breaks up with him and moves on quite quickly. Then he meets Emi and everything starts to turn around for the both of them. Just when they needed each other the most. So they decide that in order survive love and all it's cruelty that they will be friend and just friends.
I want a best friend like Nate. He is sweet, kind, and honest. The relationship he forges with Emi is very effortless. Almost as if these two are meant for something so much more. I actually can't wait to find out how there story goes. I'm definitely going to jump on the Nate and Emi train. I have a good feeling about these two.
