As a working mom of two toddlers with a new baby on the way, I am hyper-conscious about falling back on "lazy parenting" -- because it's so tempting to let Shiny Little Machines entertain my kids while I take care of other things. I have always felt guilty almost the moment I hand over my iPhone or iPad to one of my kids, worried that I am letting them "check out" for the sake of my own convenience. My mom friends and I constantly discuss "how much is okay?" when it comes to digital diversion, and opinions are often wildly varied and quite fierce. The problem was, until now, we have had almost no resources to turn to help us figure out how to manage our little ones' involvement in these machines. Finally, TODDLERS ON TECHNOLOGY has arrived, with not only a balanced, nonjudgmental approach, but tactical, hands-on advice to using digital devices in a way that can enhance a toddlers' learning process and overall growth experience. The three authors -- all experts in various iterations of child development -- provide a thorough, well-researched plan for parents to take a thoughtful route toward integrating digital tech in toddlers' lives, the KEY being is that it must connect directly/meaningful to their actual, analogue, real-world experience. In a single efficient volume, Patti Wollman Summers et al provide a how-to manual for parents trying to orchestrate the device-toddler relationship. The book assuages parental guilt without being simply feel-good, because its specificity substantiates WHY and HOW certain apps can be positive tools. A sane and necessary book. Every parent of a toddler should have a copy of it tucked into their diaper bag.

A reassuring book for parents whose kids are growing up in this increasingly digital age. It shows you how to incorporate technology in a way that encourages learning. It is laid out in an easily digestible way - especially for those of us who are spending most of our time chasing after our kids!
My favorite section is the chapter where they review apps. I have bought so many apps only to be frustrated with the game or it's limitations. Not only is it a helpful guide but I really like that they pair each app with non-digital play based activities that you can do with your child to follow up and build on what they have learned in the app.

What conscientious parent hasn't worried that those 30 minutes on the iPad are rotting their toddler's brain? I know I have. Thankfully, this terrific book provides some data-driven reassurance that technology can be good--even enriching--for our kids. The style of the book is reader-friendly and ideal for busy parents who want "bottom line" analysis in a smart, straight-forward style. I particularly enjoyed the interplay of the three authoresses (child development expert, doctor, and mom), which gave this gem dimension and "heart."

FIVE STARS!

Thank you for this book! As a grandmother of two toddlers, this book calmed my Doomsday Fears around young children using technology. Learning the potential value of interactive digital learning, as well as the concept of see-saw learning (when loving adults partner with toddlers to bring technology alive in the real world), helped me understand that technology can play a positive and significant role in enhancing toddlers' intellectual, physical, social and emotinal development. I look forward to joining my family toddlers on technology!
