The author's step-by-step practice project is especially helpful, using worsted yarn and larger needles to make toddler-sized socks. When I first learned this technique, I did it alone using this book. I made the practice socks--one in lime green and the other in bright purple. This made it easy to keep the two working yarn ends separated, and the resulting dual-colored socks were charming, warm, and fun on my toddler granddaughter!
The instructional photos are clear and well-ordered, as are the written directions. The various sock patterns that make up the rest of the book are diverse, interesting, and beautiful. Once you've followed Melissa Morgan-Oakes' guidance, you should be able to follow any toe-up sock pattern. You will also understand basic sock structure and measurement proportions.
I have knit socks one-at-a-time, cuff down, on double-pointed needles, and on 47" circular needles (Magic Loop style), and I'm totally sold on two-at-a-time, toe-up--probably because of how well this book worked for me. I always end up with two identical socks, finished at exactly the same time. No running out of yarn before the second cuff is long enough, and no second-sock syndrome where I never get around to starting the second sock!
This is a wonderful book!
When starting, I think the most important thing to do is to make the practice socks she details in the instructions. By making those, I didn't feel so overwhelmed. And when I was finished, I was amazed that I'd actually made a pair of real socks! I did have problems with short rows though. I hadn't encountered them before so I was a bit lost. I "googled" short rows and saw a video of someone doing them and that helped me a lot. I realized the short row pictures in the book matched the video exactly but I just needed to see someone actually doing it to really understand.
The pictures in the book are fantastic. The first couple of times I made socks, I kept referring to the pictures. Now when I make socks, I just skip to the parts where I need to refresh my memory.
The formula she uses did give me a bit of a headache. I was so worried the socks wouldn't fit. Then I realized something. Socks stretch - a lot. Even if I don't have the formula perfectly, as long as I have foot circumference and length, the socks will fit. I've made multiple pairs of socks for lots people and using various yarns. All the socks fit.
This is a great book. It took my knitting to another level and taught me a lot of great knitting techniques.
I like a few of the patterns ("Ballet" and "Helix" are really beautiful), but I really have to take points off for the photographs - the photos of the socks are either out of focus, are at an odd angle, or the photo sock is knitted in such a dark yarn, you can't see the pattern - example is "Out on the Town" in which the sample is knitted in black yarn (obviously for a "night on the town") but you can't see the lace pattern at all (I keep wanting to rip it out of the book so I don't have to see it any more...), or "The Keep" in a dark yarn that doesn't show the pattern. The rest are mostly out of focus, like "Twisted Baskets" and "Soft Waves", so you have to use your imagination to determine if you will like the pattern - my advice to the author is to save the artsy, dark yarn, soft-focus for your own portfolio, but let the knitter who's buying your pattern see the pattern before devoting dozens of hours to knitting your socks.
Having said all that, I am halfway up the foot of my first pair of socks from this book (just plain ol' socks in a nice yarn the reminds me of the old Socka from years ago) and I don't think it is a faster way of knitting, compared to one-at-a-time on double points, but I do love that I get both socks done at once and I don't have to kitchener stitch the toe. I will also use the technique from this book and adapt other patterns to use it with. I especially like "Sensational Knitted Socks" - a book I highly recommend.

I'm more of a crocheter but have done some knitting on straight needles in the past. This book explains everything you need to know about sock knitting and if you know how to knit, purl and cast on/off, you WILL be able to make a pair!
The photo instructions are so clear and well presented. I actually decided to make a single sock (pictured, ignore my paperclip stitch marker) first instead of doing two at once but doing two would be just as easy. I've never knitted a sock in my life and although I had a little trouble with transitioning the heel into the leg, I still wear mine with pride!
I used acrylic DK, but a proper sock yarn would be better. I also brought a pair of needles she recommended in the book - there's a whole section on yarns and needles that explains everything.
The skills this book taught me also meant I could knit so many more things than just socks. I went on to knit a dress using the circular needle techniques she explains.
Highly recommend this for anybody who wants to knit socks for the first time!
