As author Kashonia Carnegie acknowledges at the beginning of the book, to say, "Together, We CAN Change the World" sounds like "sensationalistic nonsense." But it's also essential work. We find ourselves on the brink of ecological catastrophe, with xenophobia and racism on the rise. Our world is desperately in need of more love, but bringing more love into it is harder work than the seeming cheesiness the sentiment implies.
Dr. Carnegie understands this, and guides her readers patiently through the steps to living a loving life. She begins by separating love-as-an-emotion that we feel for specific people from love as a word that "embraces all moral virtues that ensure the flourishing of the self, of others, and all of nature." She then moves on to show us how we can acquire this second type of love as a skill, beginning with ourselves and ending with the entire human and natural world.
This might sound mushy, but it actually demands tremendous courage. The first step on her journey is self-awareness. You can't make a positive difference in the world unless you understand why you do what you do so that you can train yourself out of negative impulses and behaviors. This is life-changing and lifelong work. That's why it's helpful to have Carnegie's encouraging, conversational voice guide you through the process.
Her wry sense of humor is occassionally evident throughout the book, which is also filled with anecdotes from her life and research, including a very moving segment about how she learned to love nature while living alone with two dogs in the outback of Queensland.
TOGETHER, WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD, the second book in the Raising Love Consciousness trilogy, succeeds at being both accessible and challenging, an essential combination for such an important topic. If you want to improve your own self and go on to change the world, it's a good manual to add to your mental toolkit.
