***UPDATE The sound quality is outstanding! ***
I have this twice on vinyl, and just placed my order, so I'll be waiting around three weeks. Can't speak to CD quality. Regarding the music...
First, I ripped the vinyl to Itunes, and have listened to the entire "record" start to finish over 50 times. "Together?" is a collaboration between Burt and Paul Anka.
Although i am an enormous fan of Burt's 60's and 70's work, I am less enthusiastic about his work in the 80's. However, the music and songwriting on this disc are sensational. Largely instrumental, with a couple of great songs (only eight total on the vinyl), anyone who enjoys solo Bacharach needs this right away. The music featured here is (like the excellent "Something Big" box set) NOT "Top 40" Bacharach and David. See Rhino's "The Look of Love" is that is what you are looking for. As is all Burt's work, the music is highly melodic with sweep, emotion, horns and strings. Anka's lyrics are very good, and musically, this is a sophisticated yet accessible cross between soundtrack and pop.
The music is similar, and possibly even better than "Woman", and "Futures", Burt's solo records from the mid-seventies. This is a 1979 masterpiece that I think is the last gasp of Burt's most creative era, before the underwhelming (in my opinion of course) 1980's "Arthur" theme, his collaborations with Carol Bayer Sager, etc. Jackie DeShannon and Michael McDonald sing the outstanding 7:26 minute masterwork "I've Got My Mind Made Up". It is hard to believe that hardly anyone heard this outstanding record (probably because it came at the end of the disco era and this is most definitely NOT disco).
Get this CD before it is gone forever. The musicality, the breadth and depth of musicianship, orchestration and songwriting here is no longer available anywhere in pop culture, on CD on MP3. Anywhere. The confluence of these genius's, these consummate pros, these great artists making this kind of music is simply gone. We will not see their like again.
