If you haven't given yourself a chance yet, watch this classic and make it a Christmas special.

I'll be the first to admit that my preference in anime and movies in general tends to be for the magic, the larger than life adventures, the epic battles and the surreal mind trips through other worlds. But anime isn't all magical girls, mecha, battle action and hentai-and Tokyo Godfathers isn't any of those things. Director and writer Satoshi Kon is a past master of dramatic tension and character development and those who have scene Millennium Actress or Perfect Blue may have more of an idea what to expect from this movie-but I suspect even they won't anticipate how the story twists and turns.

The setting is Tokyo at Christmas time. The characters are three homeless people: Hana, an aging drag queen, Gin, an embittered drunkard, and Miyuki, a smart mouthed teenage runaway. This unlikely "family" is about to find their lives forever changed by the discovery of a newborn baby abandoned in the trash. Sounds kind of depressing, doesn't it? The characters don't seem like they'd be likable at first, the animation isn't forgiving-these characters aren't idealized stereotypes. And then the "magic" begins. Satoshi slowly and subtly unveils his characters through the movie's unexpected twists and turns. What starts as a quest to return a baby, becomes a journey of self-discovery, adventure and redemption for these three remarkable characters. And by the end, you're breathlessly along for the ride. It's a movie that's a reminder of how incredibly good character development can be-and rarely is, even on the live action screen. For a viewer like myself, it was a surprising and touching treat. And belongs in any decent anime collection.

The animation style is gritty and realistic. Don't expect the typical big eyes or wild hair. Nor are there the stylistic chibi-cuteness moments, or wild takes that are so common in anime. It's not cute, and it doesn't try to be. This isn't an anime for the kiddies-there's tough stuff to deal with here. The nudity and sexuality of this story is pretty minimal-a few boob comments and a shot or two of babies breastfeeding. The violence isn't gory or showy-but when it's included it cuts right through the viewer. The real reason this isn't for kids is because it will take a mature audience to understand what's going on. I don't think most youngsters will appreciate the subtlety, or be ready for the types of issues presented. The message at the heart of this movie, however, is universal. It's about all the connections and permutations of family, about the ties that bind us and bring people to care. It's about small miracles.

If you are already an anime fan and you're willing to try something different from the usual fantasy or SF fare, this is a great place to start. If this is your first foray into anime, or you've been put off from the medium before, this is also a great place to start. If you're looking for curvy girls with saucer sized eyes and gumdrop colored hair, bouncy theme songs, cute fuzzy sidekicks and tricked out robot giants, find something else-this isn't the anime you're looking for. If you like this, you might also want to check out Satoshi Kon's other work, especially Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress.

Happy Viewing! ^_^ Shanshad

I've finally purchased and viewed this multi-region (Umbrella, from Australia) Blu-ray release (despite stating Region B on the cover) of Tokyo Godfathers. The video and audio quality of this release seems on par with the Japanese Blu-ray, which I have on hand, regretfully retaining even the same "pictureboxing" effect, which was probably meant to combat TV vendor default overscan, so you can see all of the intended image (but most people just see it as a hack job of having black bars around the entire picture), on a positive side, the grain structure seems intact; but there are a few exceptional differences about this release. Most important ones are found in the single subtitle track, which wisely departs from the Japanese release's translation choice during the foreign (to Japan) language portions, where both sides of a language barrier were translated, which didn't convey the proper confusion; here they omit the translation of the foreign dialog, only translating what the main character says normally in Japanese or both parties attempt through broken-English. The omission has greater effect on the flow by immersing the viewer in mainly the protagonist's perspective (if there were burned in Japanese subtitles intending for native audiences to understand the other side, then things would be different, but it wasn't originally considered important for the audience to be omniscient of their failed exchange). Furthermore, the subtitles have a bolder, easier to read font when compared to the Japanese disc; mix in some translation tweaks I noticed here and there in my spot check (it isn't Christmas/New Year's time yet...), it should overall be considered an improvement on an already serviceable script. Another unexpected feature, which nicely explains the difference between the Amazon image of the cover and what you'll initially receive, is the inclusion of a reversible cover, which offers the same nice artwork without the obnoxious age rating and company logo, plus the movie title is shifted to below all of the characters. It is a very nice and unexpected touch, which further solidifies my satisfaction about this purchase. Japanese quality in video and audio, an improvement on the English subtitles from the Japanese release, and attention to detail on the cover for collectors/enthusiasts. Just understand the intentional pictureboxing effect for what it is and enjoy this great multi-region Blu-ray of a truly great animated film, nay, masterpiece.

A good story well told. Not the best in any category, except Overall. Nicely put together.

Yeah, this movie was really good. All the characters were excellent in the story and the story itself was just awesome. I thought a movie about three homeless people finding a child would be boring, but I was surprised that it was much better then I expected. I really liked how they made the homo sexual of the trio the strongest character where most people are expecting a physically weak character which was awesome writing among many other parts. In the end, you discover what is special about the child, but I don't want to say more to spoil it.

There are also bonus features on the BluRay which was a nice in how they made the movie.

All in all it's a solid buy. It's a movie definitely worth having as you can watch it over and over again. There aren't any robots or big fight scenes, but there is a little blood and gun scene to keep it interesting, but most importantly is the characters and story that are so good. There are also good amounts of humor through out the whole movie. Again, solid writing.

I would definitely recommend it.
